Did you ever wonder how many romantic movies you’ve watched ended at an airport? Jane Tu Ya Jane Na, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein, and Chalte Chalte are just a few examples of the Bollywood ones. If you look at the regional movies, you’ll find many more such movies. This is not really a trend that we Indians are fond of. Airports and romance have always been one of the favorite combos of Hollywood movies as well. Iconic movies like Sleepless in Seattle, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, and Garden State have heart-warming scenes at airports. So, just like the movie-makers, do you think that airports are romantic? Well, we do! And it’s not just a random thought but there is actual research evidence to prove so!

According to a study conducted by the British bank, HSBC, out of every 50 airplane travelers, one person meets his/her love for life when they are on board (1)! If you’ve been in search of your soul mate, we think you should go to the airport right away and get on board! Want to know more about this interesting study? Read on.

The results of this research were obtained after interviewing 2,150 participants from 141 countries. These interviewees were asked about the likelihood of meeting the love of their life while they are in the air, 30,000 feet above the ground. The study also revealed that about half of the passengers have struck up a conversation with a stranger while they are aboard. So, airports and airplanes aren’t just for romantic relationships, but also a great place to make good friends. Based on the study, one out of every seven passengers meets a long-term friend while traveling in the air. The research also suggested that about 16% of the passengers also make business contacts during their flights.

And, it’s not just all the merry feelings that are in the air. About 48% of passengers who were surveyed admitted that they freaked out when fellow passengers took off their shoes. Also, 65% of them said that they will be put off if a co-passenger behaved rudely to a flight attendant. And, 46% of them said that drinking too much while on-board is a big NO and they’ve listed it as a complaint.

Why do you think people find probable partners when they are on board? Flights are just like any other social space, aren’t they? Well, here is the twist. You can’t access the mobile internet while you’re on the plane. You are allowed to use your phone in the flight mode because it is said to make your device safe enough to not cause electromagnetic interference. And, even if you want to use your mobile data, you can’t since no mobile network will reach that far up the sky where airplanes usually fly. So, you really don’t have much choice. You can either watch the videos on your phone, listen to songs, or talk to the person sitting next to you.

For those people who prefer to stay in their own bubble, finding love on an airplane may not really happen unless the other person takes the initiative. But, if you are a social and talkative person, a few hours on the flight without talking to anyone can probably kill you. This becomes your inspiration to talk to your co-passengers. If the person that you are talking to has a good personality and if you find them attractive, you might make plans with them because you guys are heading towards the same place anyway.

There! That’s how we guess most of the love stories born in the air begin. However, with many airlines offering Wi-Fi services inside the airplane, this trend might just drop down. It’s kind of an irony that the internet, which was intended to connect people are actually pulling them apart in real life.

Now, this may sound absurd but it’s actually not. The reason why most people meet “the one” while they’re on board is that they talk to each other and interact with others. This is something that most people in our generation have forgotten to do.

So, if you’re in search of your prince charming or princess charming, shut your laptop and switch off your phone for a while and take a stroll in your street or in the nearby park. Any place would do! Just be in the real world and take breaks from the virtual world once in a world. You never know if there’s someone who’s doing the same thing, just because they are in search of you! Have you ever been on a date with someone you met on an airplane or at the airport?
