After the country went into lockdown in the month of March, many unfortunate deaths were reported amongst the migrant laborer community. As the economy slowly started reopening, there were many out there who were still struggling to make ends meet. Enter the power of the common man and social media! Thanks to social media, many untold stories have had a new light shed on them and here are just a few of these stories:

For many street side vendors and food stall owners, their customers were their only source of livelihood. For Kanta Prasad and his wife, Badami Devi, their food stall, Baba Ka Dhaba, was the primary source of their income. Unfortunately, due to the lockdown in March, they had to shut their stall for some time. When the lockdown was lifted, they were dismayed to see that they were not attracting the regular volume of customers that they usually would. A famous Delhi food critic named Gaurav Wasan noticed the couple’s unfortunate plight and shared a video on his popular Youtube channel, @youtubeswadofficial.

In the video, Kanta Prasad spoke about how difficult it was for the couple to make ends meet and how they struggled to sell off the rotis, matar paneer, and dal they cooked with so much love and hard work. The news soon caught the attention of major celebrities and news channels and the couple’s tale went viral! By the next day, there was a line of people standing outside the shop and eating the delicious home-cooked food. Major food conglomerate Zomato too, decided to step in and signed them up on their food delivery app. The emotional video touched the hearts of celebrities and civilians alike, and they were quick to come out and help the couple.

Dr. Sanket Mehta is an anesthetist who was treating COVID patients in the city of Surat. While treating patients, the doctor, unfortunately, contracted the coronavirus himself. As he started showing respiratory failure symptoms, he was admitted into the ICU and was offered oxygen support. However, Dr. Sanket saw that one of his patients, who was a 70-year-old man, was in desperate need for a ventilator, so he selflessly gave up his ventilator support to save the life of the old man. As Dr. Sanket’s condition worsened, he was airlifted out of Surat and transferred to Chennai’s MGM hospital. He is slowly and steadily making a recovery and being looked after by a team of doctors and nurses.

On the 8th of August, Kozhikode reported a devastating plane crash that resulted in around 17 people’s death, including the two pilots. What was incredible was the number of people who came out and helped those trapped in the plane crash. People from neighboring areas poured into the accident site and helped those trapped inside the plane. Despite the fact that there is an ongoing pandemic, Keralites proved that rescuing those who were trapped was the most important act for them. They helped with the evacuation of the passengers despite the heavy and torrential rainfall and fear of catching the deadly virus. Moreso, it was the way in which the hospital staff reacted to the situation that truly caught the attention of others. They were called and informed ahead of time so that they were ready to take in the patients when they started pouring in.

According to the captain of flight 6E 122 from Delhi to Bengaluru, one of his passengers, a pregnant woman, started experiencing severe stomach pain during the flight. The flight crew was informed that there were two doctors, a gynecologist, and a plastic surgeon who were present onboard the flight. They were quick to come to the expectant mother’s aid and helped her out and performed the delivery mid-flight. The baby was born prematurely, but both mother and baby were in good health and received a warm welcome from the staff at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. After they landed, the mother and child were rushed to the hospital. Pictures and videos from the amazing flight went viral, and many commended both the airline and the doctors for their quick thinking in the situation.

It’s wonderful to see the sense of solidarity among people and to see how people will put aside their own lives in order to come out and help those who are in desperate need of help. Incidents like these help us restore our faith in humanity, and it’s pretty incredible to see that there are so many kind souls out there. During times like this, all we really have is each other to lean on, and the only way to get by is to lend a helping hand and do the best you could possibly do.
