6 Tips For Trying On Yoga Pants, Bras And Other Workout Clothes

Written by Tanya Arora  •

Without the right workout clothes, your gymming experience can turn into a scarring one. Quite literally! Too tight or too loose clothes can lead to issues like chafing, making the workout a much harder task the next time you hit the gym. Besides, you don’t really want to strut around in see-through track pants, do you? We thought not!

So, instead of trying out your gym clothes like everyday wear, give them an extra thought before you swipe that card. And if you don’t know what’s going to prove to be the perfect fit, check out our comprehensive list of tips for buying bras, yoga pants, and other workout attire. In here, you’ll find all the do’s and don’ts that’ll help you make the right decision-

1. Touch Your Toes

So you’re in the dressing room, trying out a pair of cute yoga pants. But are they the right fit? Are they stretchable enough? Do they turn sheer as you twist yourself into a yoga pose? To find that out, do a full bend and touch your toes as you try the pants on. Make sure there’s a life-size mirror (and the lighting needs to right too) in front of you so you can actually see how your behind looks when you peep in between your legs. If you find the pants stretching enough to turn sheer or if the waistband runs down, don’t buy the pants! Also, you shouldn’t buy tees that ride up enough to reveal a lot of skin as you bend.

2. Twist It

The next step to figuring out if the clothes you picked are the right ones is to do a twist test. Stand in the trial with the tee and pants on, try doing a deep lunge. A split squat will do as well. Since these exercises require major leg movement, they’ll be a good test of the way the fabric holds up. However, if the trial room is too small, a regular squat will do. You should check the fabric, the seams and the waistband to see if they feel right. If the tee or the pants seem even a tad bit uncomfortable when you do lunges or squats, you should look for other options.

3. Do The Jumping Jacks

Another easy way to know if your gym clothes are worth purchasing is to do jumping jacks in them. Not only will you find out about if and how the fabric of your pants stretches, but you’ll also know if the sports bra you have on provides enough support as you jump up and down. You can raise your arms above your head and then jump to see if the bra causes any chafing due to movement. This simple exercise can help you know if the clothes are suitable for cardio. Moreover, to check if the fabric can cause chafing, intentionally rub your arms against your tee and rub your thighs together. This is where chafing happens most often.

4. Breathe In And Breathe Out

Yoga, cardio or weights – each one of them involves focusing on the way you breathe. Hence, your workout attire should allow you enough space to breathe comfortably without causing stress of any sort. So, after your body has warmed up by doing the moves listed above, breathe in and out to check if the fabric offers enough stretch. The fabric should be breathable. If it doesn’t feel that way, pick a thinner material.

5. Take It Off

The penultimate test of the right gym clothes is taking them off! After a workout, your muscles are bound to be tired. At this point, taking off your gym clothes shouldn’t add to your tiredness by being a hassle. An essential tip to finding the right gym clothes is to ensure they’re easy to take on and take off. If you find yourself struggling to put your pants or racerback bra on in the dressing room, you haven’t exactly gotten yourself comfy clothes. And think about it, if they’re that difficult to put on, how difficult will they be to take off?

6. Just Selfie It

Last but not the least, though not very important, it’s kind of good to know if you look nice in your gym clothes. So, take a selfie and really check yourself out! Do you like what you see? If you do and your clothes have already managed to pass all the other tests we’ve talked about so far, you’ve got yourself the perfect workout clothes!

Remember, it’s very important to be comfortable in your gymming attire. Or problems like chafing, aches, and pains due to bands cutting into your skin and overall discomfort can deter you from hitting the gym. Hence, before you actually make the final purchase, keep the tips we’ve given in mind, and thank us later!
