Our eyes can be considered as one of the most sensitive organs of our body. It’s the eyes that communicate most with our brain. Half of the total information supplied to our conscious mind is from the eyes. Our eyes have muscles too, and they need to relax and exercise just like the rest of the muscles in our body. But, the sedentary lifestyle that most of us are accustomed to has started to take a toll on our eyes – reading e-books, watching shows continuously on Netflix, working on our computer for nine hours straight, etc.

There are various ways through which we can take care of our eyes. Opting for the most natural ways will be more beneficial. Issues like headaches and blurred vision can be almost eliminated or avoided. But, if you have a serious vision problem, we recommend that you visit the nearest ophthalmologist and get your eyes checked. Nevertheless, we’ve found these 5 easy tips that will keep your eyes healthy, let’s read.

If your dinner plate has more of orange and yellow colored foods, then you’re definitely eating right. You know, foods like egg yolks, carrots, oranges, pumpkin, etc. are good sources of zeaxanthin and lutein. Now, these two are the nutrients that protect us from AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) which is considered as the most common cause of blindness among the older people. And of course, it’s not just the sunshine colors, all kinds of colorful foods such as blueberries and dark green vegetables like cabbage, kale, broccoli, also help in improving eyesight (1).

2. Avoid Sugar

Consuming an excess of sugary foods is bad for not just our health but also for our vision (2). It’s very simple people; the more you eat sugar the more you are damaging your eyes. Now, sugar comes in both its natural form as well as the artificial forms. You’ll find sugar in large quantities in carbohydrates that we eat (like bread). Even the fruit juices contain sugar. It’s always better to eat your fruits and drink your veggies.

3. Take Breaks, Rest Your Eyes

Working in artificial light for hours and staring at our computer screens on a long-term basis stress our eyes. Practice the habit of taking short breaks at work, walk away from your screens. Maybe you could engage in a casual conversation with your colleague or talk over the phone to your family or friends. And never say that you forgot to take a break. If you think you might just miss taking a break, then set an alarm every 45 minutes to remind yourself that you need a break. This will keep you away from eye fatigue and eye strains.

4. Wear Eye Protection

Okay, let’s run through times when we actually wear eye protection. While we are swimming in a pool to protect our eyes from the chlorine water, and sometimes we actually end up wearing glasses in broad daylight (that’s only if we remember to carry our sunglasses, right?) Time and again, we fail to realize that our surroundings have the tiniest and the most minute dust particles that can cause harm to our eyes. Therefore, we always need to make sure that we are wearing protective eyewear. When we are gardening (the twigs, thorns, bamboo canes), when we are doing DIY jobs (sawing, sanding, etc.), while cycling, we need to protect our eyes with the appropriate eye wear. Wearing anti-glare glasses while working on your computer isn’t the only thing that will help protect your eyes, you must learn to wear sunglasses that will protect you from the ultra-violet rays of the sun that are extremely harmful to our eyes.

When you’re buying your glasses, make sure you opt for wraparound glasses. They offer the best protection to your eyes. And when it comes to sunglasses, make sure you chose the ones that have polarized lens (which help reduce the glare) and go for 99-100 pencent UV protection.

5. Blink And Massage Your Eyes

If there’s any muscle that needs to relax, it definitely is the eye muscles. And one way to do that would be a very simple eye exercise called blinking. How does blinking help? Well, blinking away helps in moisturizing our eyes naturally. It refreshes our eyes. This, in turn, refreshes our vision too. And blinking is something that we can do anywhere.

Similarly, massaging eyes is also very important. It improves the blood circulation in the areas in and around the eyes. With the help of your fingertips, gently massage your under eye areas and the brow areas in circular motions. End this massage by gently applying slight pressure to your closed eyeballs.

Now we know that it takes more than that expensive trendy sunglasses to make our eyes look great. We need to take care of our eyes if we want to continue to enjoy seeing this beautiful world around us. Have you exercised your eyes before? Let us know in the comments below.
