8 Ways To Redesign The Treasures Of Your Mom’s Closet

Written by Saumya Gaur •

Do you remember how you used to sneak out sarees out of your mom’s closet as a little girl just because you fancied to look as pretty as her? Almost every Indian girl has done this at some point of time in her childhood, and so have I.

But now that I am a fully functional adult woman with a few sarees of my own, I realize that even though those treasures of my mother’s closet are priceless, I just can’t find occasions to wear these, and I am sure you guys too are familiar with this problem.

But guess what, I found a perfect solution to this problem of mine/ours and decided to share it with you. While in search of ideas to upscale my mom’s sarees, I stumbled upon pretty innovative ways by which one can remodel sarees into more modern and comfortable avatars. Are you keen to know what they are? Here you go:

1. Upcycle Your Mom’s Precious Banarasi Saree Into A Regal Lehenga

It’s almost a given that all Indian mothers love their precious Banarasi sarees to bits. You just can’t downgrade a Banarasi saree into a plebeian jacket, unless you really want to incur her wrath. So, what would be an apt remodeling of a heritage Banarasi saree? A lehenga of course! In doing so not only will you be able to salvage the saree in its entirety, but you will also have an outfit which would have a unique history unlike the mass-produced versions available in the market.

2. You Can Even Turn It Into This Chic Pencil Skirt

If you don’t want to go down the ethnic route and still want to make the heavy Kanjeevarams and Banarasis of your mom’s wardrobe a part of yours, then might we suggest that you use them to create this chic skirt? The silk fabric of the sarees will allow you to either go for a slim-fitted version or you can either add pleats to give it a more voluminous look.

3. Refashion Her Chiffon Sarees Into Cool Shrugs

Chiffon is a very breezy fabric, but it doesn’t wick moisture. So, it would be apt to use a chiffon saree for making a jacket or a shrug. You can use a printed saree with small prints on it for making a long shrug or a jacket. It will give a very bohemian vibe to your whole look. You can use it with western as well as ethnic outfits.

4. Give Your Mom’s Breezy Chiffons This Snazzy Makeover In The Form Of A Strappy Sundress

A saree is basically just nine yards of fabric, so you have a lot of leeways to play around in terms of creating a new outfit. One such outfit is a maxi dress. It would be the perfect way to give a traditional outfit a spunky makeover. If you want a strappy, sunny number, you can choose a chiffon saree for that purpose. Otherwise, heavy fabrics such as silk can be used to create more elegant formal versions of the same.

5. Turn Your Mom’s Paper Silk Saree Into This Boho Crop Top

Could it be any cooler? (Yup, as you can see, I am channeling my inner Chandler) This crop top is not only the perfect way to beat the heat and show off your awesome bod, but it’s an inspired way of salvaging your mom’s precious paper silks as well. If you want a more Indo-western look, we suggest you choose a batik printed paper silk for this purpose.

6. Fashion Your Mother’s Favorites Into This Bespoke Ball Gown

Sarees are often regarded as formal wear. In fact, there is also the unspoken tradition of teenage girls draping themselves in the nine yards for their high school farewells. Keeping this bit of cultural history in mind, we have found a unique way of redesigning favorites into the attire of equal stature. A ball gown! A ball gown dress is just as elegant and formal as a saree, albeit in a different manner.

7. Give Her Cotton Saree An Indo-Western Spin

If you are a gal whose personal style is dominated by Indo-western tastes, then this is the perfect solution for you. Instead of chucking your mother’s old cotton sarees, you can use them to create a layered Indo-western dress. An indigo-hued long layered jacket (as pictured above) will be just the thing for you.

8. Up Your Style Game By Redesigning Your Mom’s Classic Saree Into A Bomber jacket

Is your mom a fan of embroidered saree? If yes, then instead of using them to make heavy curtains, you can make a stylish bomber jacket for yourself. You can use the embroidered bits to create a fusion look. Pair it with a monochrome outfit to highlight the work.

Aren’t these fun ways of incorporating your mother’s precious treasures in your own wardrobe? Traditional sarees don’t really carry the outdated tag. You just need the vision to refurbish them in a new avatar.
