7 Reactions Your Mother Will Have When You Introduce Her To Indian Web Series

Written by Niharika Nayak, BA (Media & Communication)  •

With the world moving to watching movies and shows on their phone and laptop screens, it’s about time we introduced our parents to the world of OTT as well. However, before you decide to introduce your mother to an Indian web series we must warn you of how she may react to the content of the shows. Indian web series are notorious for showing things that are usually avoided on big screens and touching on topics that are of a more sensitive nature. Certain times they are violent in nature and if you’re watching a series for the first time with your mother, read up on it a little bit before you begin. So here are a few reactions you might have to deal with if you introduce your mother to Indian web series:

1. “OMG, There’s So Much Swearing!”

Yes mother, most Indian web shows do contain swearing. It’s a part of the script and usually works well when it is not overdone. Inform your mother that some of the swearing in the shows just go with the script and the character personas and that she should not take it too personally. Plus, these shows are targeted at a more adult and mature audience in the first place and usually have statutory warnings ahead of even the title.

2. “Why Is This Show So Violent?”

Some of the highest performing web series like Sacred Games and Delhi Crime contain a lot of violence but it doesn’t change the fact that they have incredible scripts and amazing talent to back it all up. With many movie actors like Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shefali Shah also acting in these web series, it’s no surprise that the quality of the content keeps getting better and better.

3. “These Subtitles Are Moving Too Fast. Rewind!”

Mothers can often get distracted easily and find it hard to focus on intense moments and scenes. Gently tell you mother that you will inform her of any parts she may have missed after you’ve finished taking it in. Or you can pause it every now and then to catch her up to what is happening if she absolutely cannot pay attention.

4. “Why Are They Behaving So… Obscenely?”

A lot of our parents’ generation aren’t used to seeing extreme violence on televisions. They’re also not used to seeing open swearing, underaged drinking, drug use, people making out and many other taboo topics being broadcast on screens. So you can expect them to be a little taken aback when they first start watching such shows, right?

5. “Do Regular College Kids Indulge In So Many Vices?”

Yes, there may be tonnes of scenes where they show young and older people partaking in drugs and other illegal activities but inform your mother that it is just a TV show and not reality. Of course, these days many parents have a very dark perspective of what goes on in Bollywood, but let them know that the TV show is just make believe and not what actually happens. Many shows also show the dark side of the underworld and many crime rings that are often not talked about in mainstream movies.

6. “Oh That’s The Actor From That Movie I Saw”

Trust your mother to try and remember some random actor from somewhere that you have absolutely no clue about. Her guesses most likely would be highly inaccurate as well. The thing about moms is that they love to recall and recollect and if they think they recognise an actor, they will insist they know him from somewhere before. The only way to change her mind is by making her ask Google. If there’s one thing moms do trust, it’s Google.

7. “This Show Is Way Too Complicated For My Liking”

Moms will often talk about how a show is way too complicated for their liking and hence will not want to complete watching an entire series. Tell your mother that the commitment to the series is worth it and convince her to give the entire series a watch. There are plenty of mom-friendly shows you can show your mother as well if the shows that you tend to favor are not of her interest. But we do recommend that you and your mom at least find one series to hold common ground and talk about.

In the end, if your mom isn’t the type of person to enjoy content that is more intense and story driven, you’d have to find her other options to watch. You cannot force your mom to watch a show with you if it’s not to her liking. However, we’re sure there must be at least one Indian web series out there that you and your mom can both enjoy watching together. Also, remember that this article does not apply for all moms and we may have generalized things a bit here. Let us know what your thoughts on this article are in the comment section below.
