I Am Beautiful: 4 Reasons I Rebel Against Wearing Makeup

Written by Shivani K  •

How many of us out there are obsessed with the Instagram and Snapchat filters? You know, the ones which make your eyes look perfectly dove-like or the ones that make you look like you’ve got the perfect blush on your cheeks. If you’re someone who uses these filters, then I can bet that you are a person who loves makeup too, unlike me. Yes, you heard that right, I think that I am a pretty woman (well, at least I consider myself to be one, in my own world) and I simply don’t own a makeup kit (neither do I want one in future).

Aren’t we all bombarded with copious commercials where the models, both male and female, wake up looking flawless and then go on to say, “I woke up like this”? As much as we are enticed by the perfect beauty they project on screens, we all know that they weren’t born that way; behind those perfect-looking faces are some of the world’s most reputed cosmetics companies.

What exactly does makeup mean to you? Well, all my life, I’ve seen girls and women around me getting ready for a special occasion – wearing makeup and that occasion-appropriate outfit. They seemed to have fun doing so, but for me, it looked it like a dramatic production that involved pencils, mascaras, powders, and a convoluted assortment of apparatuses (which looked pretty dangerous to me). On such occasions, all I would do was make an effort to take a nice shower, moisturize my skin and wear an antiperspirant.

I don’t like makeup. Period. It’s not that I’m allergic to it, nor is it against the norms of the religion I practice. But everybody still wants to know why I’ve chosen not to wear makeup. Therefore, I came up with four silly (to you) but equally meaningful (to me) reasons that would justify my choice and at the same time answer your question. Read on.

1. I Don’t Have Time For It (I Love My Sleep)

To me, sleep is what water is to the plants. It’s essential, it’s vital. Without sleep, life seems nothing like an unbearable symphony. Makeup requires a lot of effort and hard work. I know friends who wake up an hour early in the morning in order to have sufficient time to put on makeup and look fabulous all day long. That’s like an extra hour wasted in addition to the valuable time that is already lost in traffic jams. And, that too, every day. So, you still want to know why? Makeup? None for me please, thank you!

2. I Save A Hell Lot Of Money

Everybody needs money, right? No matter how much you earn, you still feel that it isn’t enough for all your needs. If you’d make a pie chart of your monthly expenses, don’t be surprised when you see the makeup section taking a good chunk of it. Makeup goes on skin and skin is something which we all love taking care of and rightly so. Now, obviously, you’re not going to buy cheap makeup products and risk your skin. You will buy good products that will obviously burn a hole in your pockets. When you’re done with your pie chart, let me know, I’ll share mine and you’ll see how much money I save by not wearing makeup.

3. I Feel Free, I Feel Like Myself

When you wear makeup and meet people, they are seeing an illusory version of you, they get an unrealistic perception of you. I agree that everybody has insecurities. And for some, it’s just about enhancing their beauty. However, if I get used to seeing myself in the mirror with a face full of makeup and feel secure by that, I’m sure I’ll be even more insecure when I take the makeup off my face. They say little makeup won’t do much harm, but you never know when that little will become a lot, right? So, I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to drown myself in makeup. I’ll probably mistake my reflection in the mirror for someday else when I wipe away the makeup.

4. Guys Still Hit On Me (Wink-Wink)

If you’re under the impression that guys will stop noticing you just because you aren’t wearing any makeup, please think again. I’m saying this from my personal experiences. All the dates that I’ve been on, every single one, I’ve gone without any makeup on, totally barefaced. A guy’s attraction towards you has nothing to do with makeup, it’s your vibe that attracts him to you. After all, your vibe attracts your tribe well, right?

And that’s precisely why I don’t like wearing makeup, but if you still love wearing makeup, then go ahead. Each to her own, right? But, hey! If you are a no-makeup person like me, share your reasons as to why in the comments below.
