OMG! I can’t believe October is already here and the festive season has officially kicked off. It feels like 2018 had started a couple of weeks ago and I was busy listing my resolutions for the year! Funny how time flies by. You don’t even see it take off with its wings spread and it’s already gone, leaving you with a bunch of dates and some memories.

Okay, let’s not get sentimental in this bright season. Today, we’re here to talk about New Year Resolutions! An odd time to talk about them — it’s either too late to make one or way too early. But making a resolution is not the topic. Today, our discussion is on, as you can already tell, what happens after a resolution has been taken! And it’s the perfect time for that since more than half the year is over.

So, allow me to share my experience with you. Let’s see what became of the resolutions I took!

Right off the bat, I’m an ordinary person. My New Year’s resolutions are not bizarre like “I resolve to stop chewing my hair” or “I vow not to dress up as a superhero and stand on my terrace as a vigilante every night.” No, I’m a simple girl with resolutions that just about everyone tries to make but isn’t able to keep up with. So, here are the resolutions I took when 2018 welcomed itself into our lives:

Resolution #1: I Resolve To Lose Weight

Yep, that’s the top one on my list! Almost every year, I try to be fitter and almost every year, I miserably fail. So this one is kind of a recurring resolution that reappears as a sequel of that badly made C-grade movie that nobody wants to watch.

Resolution #2: I Resolve To Read More Books And Watch More Movies

Kind of an odd resolution to have, isn’t it? I’m one of those rare people who actually watch too few movies if that even happens! It’s not like I have a philosophy behind it. I’m just too lazy to watch moves! Is that a paradox? Anyway, the books department is also where I lag behind, so yeah!

Resolution #3: I Resolve To Save 50 Percent Of My Salary

I can hear a lot of people ROFL-ing at this and to be honest, I’m kind of laughing out loud in my own head too! This is like so hard to do. I mean, it’s as hard as not crying while watching Phoebe’s and Mike’s wedding in Friends for the umpteenth time! And, that’s pretty hard. At least for me.

What Happened After I Took The 3 Resolutions

I came up with a plan to stick to the resolutions that I took. My plan was simple — I took my phone, downloaded a cool, fun, and motivating reminders app and set reminders for each resolution. For instance, for the weight loss resolution, I set a reminder in the morning to work out instead of sleep extra. And, I also added reminders at each mealtime to eat healthily. Then, at night, I set a reminder to read or watch something. And I set a reminder, twice a day, to spend less. I wanted these to become habits, hence the multiple reminders! Coming back to the reality of my experience, well, January wasn’t great. It’s my birthday month so the first and the last resolutions were completely out of the window! I ate like crazy, lazed like crazy (hello, it’s winter!), and spent like crazy because it’s my birthday month. However, I did make it a point to watch or read something. It’s safe to say that at least one of the resolutions worked out well (kind of).

The next month, I found myself exercising and eating healthily, but only occasionally. The money-saving thing was still faring better, but I managed to save only 15 percent of my salary instead of 50 percent, which is still okay as its better than nada! However, the movie and books thing was going great!

Fast-forward to a few months later and things kind of changed. I caught on to the habit of watching movies and reading books, so I completely disabled that reminder. But, I also disabled the one on losing weight. I just gave up. Food is my comfort and lazing is my birthright! As for saving money, it wasn’t that bad. I was saving 10 to 15 percent, even 20 percent in some months, so I was quite happy with that!

It’s September now and I’ve disabled all reminders because they got annoying. Also, I realized that I’m just not cut out for all resolutions. I mean, some I can do and some I just can’t! The aim is to be realistic with the goals you set. And also you really have to want to follow your resolutions instead of taking it for the heck of it! That’s the only way to make resolutions work!
