People aren’t joking when they tell you that your 20s are one of the most important years of your life. For many of us, our twenties give us the first taste of independence and we are often given advice from tonnes of people around us. But, when it comes to advice, it needs to be useful, right? Well, we’re not here to tell you what to do, but some of this advice could prove to be more helpful than you think. When you’re in your 20s, the world is your oyster and there is so much out there that you can endeavor towards. So here are nine important things that you should start working on once you hit your 20s:
1. Aim Towards Financial Independence
If it’s not evident, we live in a highly competitive and unpredictable world. It is important that you start saving up for your future from the time you start working. Even if you do not want to hold a full-time job, it is extremely crucial that you work part-time or freelance and save up some money. No matter how rich your family might be, there might come a time where you need to take up a job or earn extra money on the side. The 20s are the beginning of savings for your 30s. A little bit of struggle now and your 30s would probably require less struggle if you do the right savings and investments. We know life is unpredictable, but we can try!
2. Start Taking Care Of Your Mental Health
Mental health is often neglected in our society and does not receive the attention and due credit that it deserves. Your 20s can be a stressful time for you and it is important that you start working towards taking care of your mental health. Not everyone can fit into the stereotypical window of what we call “adults”. The grind can be hard, and there will be times when failure will lower your self-esteem and lead to depression. This could mean visiting a therapist or practicing meditation and certain self-care routines or even journaling.
3. Stop Being Afraid To Question Authority
As women, we are often taught that we must not question authority and instead should sit quietly and take everything that life throws at us. This can naturally lead to fears speaking up around those who are older than us even when we know that they are in the wrong. We understand that these tactics are used to control us when we are children and that it is hard to grow out of them, but we must try our best to stand our ground. For example, strict parents would always see their children as kids, so handling their questions and decision-making statements is important. Read up on books that preach about handling relationships. That’s the real adulting right there!
4. Start Working On Building Your Confidence
Your twenties are the best time to experiment with different styles and shed any of the (sometimes toxic) beliefs that you may be brought upon. It is important to remember that your childhood does not define you. Just because you were bullied during your childhood days, doesn’t mean that you would go through the same as an adult. So work on uplifting yourself and being bold and confident in your approach towards life.
5. Find A Trustworthy Gynaecologist
The health of your downstairs bits matters too! Just because you might not be having fun in the sack currently, doesn’t mean that you should skip visiting your gynecologist. We understand that discussing reproductive health can be a stressful topic and that it can be difficult to find someone trustworthy, but it is extremely important to do so. Take regular appointments and share your vaginal concerns, no matter how trivial they may seem.
6. Start Traveling More Often
Spending money on travel is never a waste of time or money. Traveling is about creating memories and experimenting with new experiences. Rather than spending all your money on material items that will eventually get spoiled, it’s a good idea to spend money on traveling and making good memories.
7. Find A Good Support System
Life is a long journey and the company you keep matters a lot. Yes, adulting can be difficult but having a solid support system around you is extremely important. Just as making time for your partner and family is important, so is making time for your friends. As we get older, life will only get busier and more difficult as time goes on. All we really need is one or two good friends who want the best for us and we are good to go.
8. Stop Being Afraid Of Failure
It is totally okay to make mistakes every now and then. Nobody is perfect and you don’t need to pretend to be. It is important that you make mistakes so that you can build your resilience. It’s okay if life doesn’t always turn out the way you might have planned or intended. Getting out of your comfort zone and trying something new is an extremely important task. Learn from that experience and come out stronger for a sure shot at success.
9. Don’t Laugh At Jokes You Don’t Find Funny
We are often expected to laugh at jokes that are not funny just to please others. If someone you know makes an offensive, racist, and stereotypical joke, there is no harm in calling them out and asking them to explain why the joke is funny. Moreso, why should your sense of humor depend on jokes that belittle women, assault survivors, those who suffer from mental health issues, and more. You don’t have to smile and pretend like everything is fine and dandy if you don’t want to.
Life is all about getting out of your comfort zone and trying new experiences. You don’t have to put yourself through bad friendships, difficult jobs and toxic relationships just because you want to appear “normal”. It’s okay to not be okay.
