Top 9 Items You’re Too Old to Wear

Written by Saumya Gaur •

We all have that one shirt in our closet that has already been worn to death, don’t we? But today we aren’t here to talk about the best way to declutter your wardrobe, we are here to talk about those denizens of your cupboard that are due for their retirement.

Wearing clothes of our choice is one the most basic ways in which one can express themselves and their unique style. But as much as we would like to be the proponents of the “Just be you” philosophy, when it comes to everyone’s sartorial choices, there are some that really force us to put on our reading glasses and shake our heads looking at the sorry mess they’ve made.

This is not to say that we are blatantly pushing ageist propaganda, but there are some sartorial choices that are too juvenile to have a place in an adult woman’s wardrobe. Wondering what they are? Read on to know more:

1. Anything With Butterfly Print

Butterflies print or for that matter any such other whimsical print belongs in the wardrobe of an adolescent child. You think it might look good on you, but the truth is you’ve outgrown it. If you must venture in the animal kingdom for your fashion inspiration, then we would suggest you move up the food chain and consider other choices such as leopard print or snakeskin.

2. The Rebel Clothing

You might have been a goth girl all along but trust us when we say that there are other ways to express your fierce avatar than wearing Avril Lavigne-inspired goth t-shirts, proclaiming you as the next angry young woman. If you prefer to dress a little edgier, you can do so by getting a snazzy haircut and pairing it with a wardrobe composed of darker colors and sharper cuts.

3. Too Much Of Pink

A little bit of rosy hue in your wardrobe will make you appear posh and chic, while too much off it can be read as a flashback to your barbie girl days. If you want to go bold with pink, try the technique of color blocking. It will set you apart as a fashion influencer!

4. Extremely Distressed Jeans

While distressed jeans have always been in fashion, there’s something to be said about carrying this trend too far. If your jeans look like it can barely hold it together, then it might be time to throw it out. Our advice: Go for a well-fitted pair of jeans that is suitable for a well-functioning adult like you. Although, one or two random cuts across the knee is nothing to worry about.

5. Flouncy Skirts

A tutu on a young girl makes her look like a prima ballerina, but the same can’t be said about a twenty-something young woman. Skirts are a very feminine piece of clothing, find a style that is functional and also flatters your body-type. We recommend going for pencil skirts, which make for very flattering formal wear as well.

6. Scrunchies

A scrunchy is usually a reminder of those days when tying your hair was a feat that you were unable to achieve on your own. Since you are no longer a girl scout, might we suggest expanding your hair tool kit? Besides, when in doubt, know this that a chic chignon or a messy bun is a thousand times better than a raggedy pony. If you do intend to tie your hair in a pony, we would advise you to go for the plastic ties that are invisible and don’t crease your hair. That’s a more adult alternative to the good ol’ scrunchy.

7. Uncomfortable Costume Shoes

Now that you are a fully-functional adult, who can look after herself and survive on her own, you also need to learn to be a little kinder to your body. Choose comfort over fashion, and stop sacrificing your poor feet. Ditch those uncomfortable killer heels in favor of stylish footwear which doesn’t give you vertigo.

8. Overly-Accessorized Bags

When we were younger, the mantra was “more of everything”, but as you enter adulthood, you realize that simplicity is the highest degree of sophistication. Therefore, swap those overly accessorized handbags with sleeker, simpler handbags.

9. Cheap Underwear

This is the last item to feature on this list, but it is the most important. If you are someone who prefers to buy their underwear in bulk, to save a few pennies, then you’re doing yourself no favors by doing that. That way you might be able to save a few pennies, but that cheap underwear is going to spoil your whole look by making you tug at the seams, or just by giving you a weird fit. Therefore, it’s time you invest in some quality underwear, leave the cheap junk in the trash.

These were a few items that we hope you would bid farewell to (in case you still have them in your wardrobes). But as we have said earlier in this article, it wasn’t written to put an age warning on certain items of clothing, rather the idea was to help you convey your personal style in a more mature way. We hope we were able to help you do that.

In case you have any additions of your own for this list, please share them with us in the comments section.
