Being a celebrity is no easy task. Not only are you at the receiving end of people’s judgment, but the media too will not let you off easily. Like in the United States, taking pictures of celebrities doing ordinary things has become a massive industry. This time, actress Janhvi Kapoor and her younger sister Khushi were the ones who faced the fury of paparazzi. The young ladies were out riding their bicycles in their Lokhandwala neighborhood when paparazzi started cycling and running after them looking to get that perfect shot. The girls, however, reacted with nothing but grace and sophistication.

Janhvi isn’t one to shy away from cameras. After all, she is the daughter of the late veteran actress Sridevi and her husband, producer Boney Kapoor. However, as everyone knows, there is a time and a place for pictures. It’s outright dangerous for the paparazzi to be chasing after her on busy streets as they could risk getting into an accident or causing her and her sister to get into one. In a video shared by one of the paparazzi, Janhvi was seen trying her hardest to avoid hitting the paparazzi with her cycle and saying, “It’s dangerous. Aise, please mat karo (please don’t do this)”. Her sister Khushi was heard saying, “Sir, raasta please de do” as she was cycling behind her.

The sisters eventually managed to evade the paparazzi and enter their apartment complex. They were out cycling with another friend of theirs and were seen getting off their bicycles and talking to their friend. Thankfully, the paparazzi were stopped by security before they could follow the actress and her sister into their apartment complex. The sisters have recently taken to cycling around their neighborhood to keep fit due to gyms being shut during the lockdown. Khushi is currently studying in the United States and returned home during break. Earlier, she had also faced an invasion of her privacy when paparazzi started following her while she was out walking her dog. Some of them even got close enough to zoom in on her phone lock screen (talk about getting too close for comfort!).

Everyone knows that being a celebrity comes with both perks and disadvantages. But is it really fair to hunt stars down and stalk them when they are going about their day-to-day life? Their job is to act, and not to entertain people while they shop, exercise, grab some food, and more. It really is unfair that they would be followed while doing something as basic as cycling around their neighborhood. Despite being hounded by the paparazzi, Janhvi and Khushi showed as much grace as possible and were extremely polite. While Janhvi is an actress, it’s even sadder that Khushi, who has nothing to do with the film industry, is getting dragged into the media frenzy. Of course, this is not the first time that the girls have been under the scanner of the paparazzi.

Facing Media Scrutiny

Janhvi and her younger sister Khushi and older half-sister Anshula have often been followed by paparazzi. Many online gossip magazines would share pictures of the sisters living their lives, without consent. Anshula has often faced the wrath of trolls and has been harassed incessantly by paparazzi. Their older brother, actor Arjun Kapoor has often come out to defend them and spoken about how disgusted he feels when he sees headlines criticizing his sisters. A while back, Janhvi and Khushi were photographed visiting Arjun, and Janhvi’s outfit was scrutinized. Many wrote vulgar headlines and passed disgusting comments about the actress, and it was Arjun who took to social media to criticize them.

Arjun wrote a strongly worded tweet and stated that it was shameful that people’s eyes would go searching for all the wrongs in one’s outfit. He wrote about how it was shameful that our country looked at women through such a vulgar lens and said that the paparazzi should feel ashamed. Khushi was wearing her school uniform at the time, and she wasn’t spared from paparazzi shots either. Arjun, who is highly protective of his younger sisters, has often spoken out about how much they are harassed for the smallest of things. After his appearance with Janhvi on Koffee With Karan, Anshula too was harassed over the smallest of incidents.

While many may argue that as celebrities, they are signing up to be under the constant scrutiny of the media, it isn’t fair. Just because someone is a celebrity or is related to a star doesn’t mean that they deserve to have their privacy on the line or that they deserve to be chased after. In the end, we need to give them the same level of privacy as we would anybody else. Taking pictures of them from weird angles or following them when they are grocery shopping is just rude and outright harassment.
