Feared Losing Her Career In The 90s; Juhi Chawla Kept Her Wedding With Jay Mehta A Secret
Bollywood has given us love stories that have warmed our hearts. Some of these age-old love stories have elements of thrill, surprise, and a fairytale romance while some others were surrounded by modern-day love and courtship. We’re all familiar with love stories in which the man showers the girl of his dreams with innumerable gifts. In the case of the vivacious Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla, her husband, Jay Mehta wooed her for months before she agreed to marry him.
Recently, in an interview, Juhi Chawla revealed that the reason she kept her relationship a secret initially was because she was scared to lose her career. She said that since it was a time when smartphones and the internet were not very prominent it was an easy decision to make. The former Miss India said, “That’s the time Jay was serenading me and I was afraid of losing my career just when I had kind of got there. I wanted to carry on and this seemed the midway.”
Juhi and Jay: Love Story Revealed
Unlike most love stories, this duo’s relationship started because of a tragedy. They met for the first time during the shoot of the film Karobar. Rakesh Roshan, the director of the film introduced his dear friend and businessman Jay Mehta to the star actress of the movie, Juhi Chawla. The movie did not perform as expected but they found love in each other and partner for a lifetime. The couple met multiple times during the making of the movie but had no traces of romantic feelings towards each other. Jay was a doting husband to his wife Sujata Birla and Juhi was a hardworking actress dedicated to her career. But tragedy struck their lives and brought them together. Jay Mehta lost his beloved wife in a plane crash in 1990 and Juhi was the one who helped him through it. Through these trying times, they grew close to each other and very fond of each other.
However, it was not until years later that Juhi revealed the truth behind their relationship. In an interview, she said that Jay left no stone unturned to win her heart. The Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak actress was showered with gifts and cute little notes every time they met. Juhi revealed, “Every day, for over a year, every single day, I would receive flowers, gifts, cards, every day.” She stated how Jay sent her a truckload of roses on her birthday and the actress wondered what to do with them. During shoots, he flew to where she was to meet her and made sure he did all the romantic stuff right. Later in 1995, they tied the knot and are now perfectly in love. The couple is blessed with two children, daughter Janhvi and son Arjun.
Tragedy Brought Them Closer
It was quite common back in the day for actresses to choose marriage over their careers. More often than not, actresses who were flourishing in their career were afraid that they would lose the opportunity to remian stars once they get married. Even though this was not the case for male actors who continued to maintain their stardom after they tied the knot, actresses did not have that luxury in a male-dominated industry. Juhi too had the same concerns and chose to have a clandestine marriage. In 1998, during the shooting of Duplicate, the actress lost her mother Mona Chawla in an accident. She was on the sets of the movie when she received the horrifying news about her mother’s demise. The same year, her brother lost his life after a prolonged illness. The actress said that it was the most difficult time of her life because she felt like she was going to lose everything and everyone she loved. This time Jay supported her and was her source of strength. He stood by her and gave her the emotional solace and comfort she needed. Tragedy brought them together and left their love for each other to bloom.
While Juhi Chawla has been a famous personality in Bollywood, she has also been a successful and doting mother and wife. Juhi Chawla has acted in over 90 movies so far in her career.
