For those of you who grew up in the 90s, the song Kaanta Laga was a scandalous guilty pleasure. Nothing could ever beat the romantic songs and peppy music that the 90s had to offer. Although many of us may never admit it, we do often find ourselves grooving to that music. From songs like “Tu tu hai wahi” by Mahhi Vij to songs like “Pehla nasha”, the late 90s and the early 2000s were a gold mine of precious memories for all of us. Recently, Shefali Jariwala, the girl who starred in the song, “Kaanta Laga” spoke to a leading news daily and revealed everything that went into making this song. The young reality star has managed to come a long way from her fun college days and is now happily married and planning on starting her own family. Here’s what went on behind the scenes of “Kaanta Laga” and what Shefali has been up to since she starred in the video:
Kaanta Laga Days
Shefali revealed that when the producers had approached her to shoot the song, she was studying in an engineering college. The actress belongs to a family of academicians and she spoke about how her family was initially against her decision to star in the song. Shefali stated that although her parents were against the decision, she still went ahead with it as she was paid around 7000 rupees for her appearance. She candidly stated that she really wanted to see herself on television and hence decided to act in the song’s video. She also spoke about how along with her mother, she managed to convince her father to let her star in the video. According to Shefali, her mother was the one who convinced her father to let her act in the video and she had to confide in her first (yay, girl power!).
The video in itself was hilarious and well ahead of its time and even dug at certain stereotypes like “adult magazines are only for men”. The video also features classic cringy trends from the early 2000s like bright thongs that peek from your outfits, loud eyeshadow, skinny eyebrows, uber glossy nude lips, and oddly placed tattoos. Yes, this is the very song that made your parents probably hide their faces and skip the channel when you were a child. Or if you’re one of the lucky few who watched this song without parental guidance then you probably grew up way too quickly for your own good. Either way, there’s no denying that this song is a total bopper and every 90s Indian kid can probably sing along if they hear the song in a club. Besides being popularly used to symbolize certain characters in Hindi films and shows, this song has its own unique charm to it.
What She’s Been Up to Lately
Shefali recently came to the media’s attention after she entered the popular reality show, Bigg Boss 13. The glamorous starlet has now emerged as one of the strongest contestants on the reality show. Shefali also tied the knot with the love of her life, Parag Desai in 2014. The couple had a low-key court marriage and have been each other’s support systems since they first met. The pair is now on their way to adopting a baby girl and completing their family. The star had openly spoken about her decision to adopt a child. She spoke about how she had wanted to adopt a child since she was in her pre-teens. Shefali also added that the entire process is extremely tedious and lengthy since there is a lot of paperwork involved and she hopes for the best in the future.
According to Shefali, her husband Parag is extremely supportive of her decision and the celebrity admitted that she felt inspired after interacting with Sunny Leone and decided to adopt a child soon after. She added that her husband supported her decision and it was up to her to choose to have her own child or decide to adopt a child instead (how understanding!). Shefali spoke about how there are a lot of children out there who need good homes and a good life. She stated that she has everything that she needs and that she would want a child to have the same.
It’s wonderful to see how Shefali’s crazy professional and personal journey panned out through the course of the years.
