Karisma Kapoor is a woman who needs no introduction. The older Kapoor sister has been the recipient of a National Film Award and has also bagged 4 Filmfare Awards. Once the highest-paid actress in Bollywood, Karisma has since taken a step back and devoted her time to raising her two children, Kiaan and Samaira Kapur. After a rather messy divorce, Karisma has been raising her two children as a single mom and has come out of her hiatus to start acting in web series. Recently, she was quizzed about her daughter’s interest in following the same path as her. Here’s what she had to say:

During the interview, Karisma explained that her daughter is very young but she is showing interest in experimenting with films. However, it’s not just in front of the camera. The actress said that her daughter and her friends are interested in all aspects of films and are starting to experiment and learn the ropes of it. She insisted that there were no concrete plans in place yet as her daughter is still young and in school. She added that she would never discourage her daughter from pursuing acting just because she pursued it as a profession. She stated that she backs her children up in their own decisions and would never over-encourage or under-encourage them. According to Karisma, “My philosophy is ‘believe in yourself and do things which make you happy.”

A few weeks ago, Samaria made her short film debut with a small supporting role in a film directed by Rysa Panday called Daud. Rysa is the younger daughter of Chunky Panday and wrote the script herself. The film deals with a poor young girl who wants to run but cannot afford to buy shoes. She encounters a group of well-to-do older children who pool in their money and buy her a pair of shoes to encourage her dreams. The beautiful film shows how all a child needs is the support of those around them to succeed in life. Many praised the young star kids for their efforts to raise awareness about those less fortunate and commended 15-year-old Rysa Panday and Samaira Kapur in their efforts.

While many may believe Karisma was privileged when she chose to pursue acting as she came from a family of actors, that is not the case. Although Karisma Kapoor comes from the prestigious Kapoor khandan, the men in the family are notorious for not allowing women to act in films. Whether it be their wives or their daughters, the Kapoors had a strict no-acting rule imposed on the women. On top of that, Karisma’s parents, Randhir Kapoor and Babita separated when she was very young and her mother raised Karisma and Kareena as a single parent. Karisma’s mother Babita was a very talented actress in her heyday as well. However, she gave up on her acting dreams after she married Randhir Kapoor. Karisma eventually made her acting debut at the ripe young age of 17 with the film Prem Qaidi. The film received favorable reviews but many critics were quick to call out Karisma’s acting and didn’t seem to compliment her skills. Her next five films ended up flopping terribly at the box office.

Many actresses would be pretty beat after enduring back to back flops but not Karisma. Karisma continued acting and her next films, Jigar and Anari became huge box office hits and ended up amongst the highest-grossing films of those two years. Although Karisma’s initial years were quite the struggle she went on to make a name for herself and gain critical acclaim for her acting in the 90s. It was in the mid-90s that Karisma finally started receiving attention and accolades for her work. After a highly publicized relationship and later broken engagement to Abhishek Bachchan, Karisma decided to tie the knot with wealthy industrialist, Sanjay Kapur in 2003. The actress gave birth to their first child, Samaira in 2005 and their second child Kiaan in 2010. Unfortunately, their marriage didn’t work out and the couple filed for divorce in 2014. The pair engaged in a lot of mud-slinging initially and finalized their divorce in the year 2016. Following her divorce, Karisma came out of hiatus and started making small appearances in films again. In 2020, Karisma started starring in a web series called Mentalhood. The film discusses the challenges of motherhood and features Karisma as a mother juggling the lives of her three children. The film also features a star cast of Sandhya Mridul, Sanjay Suri, Shilpa Shukla and television actress Shruti Seth in leading roles.

It’s incredible to see Karisma’s daughter taking to films like her beloved mother and we’re hoping to see more of her on the big screen. Click here to watch Rysa and Samaira’s film, Daud.
