8 Reasons Why You Should Keep Your Girlfriends Close Throughout Your Life

It was a Sunday afternoon and the movie Veere di wedding was playing on TV. Not wanting to miss such a great opportunity, I grabbed some popcorn and sat down to watch it. Unfortunately, I was joined by my husband in this viewing. If you are asking what’s unfortunate about it. Well, unfortunate because I had to explain the concept of girl bonding to him again and again. To him, it was just a movie about a bunch of girls making much ado over nothing. On the other hand, for me, it was like watching the picture reel of all my best moments with my girls. So, if you are also among those clueless fellows who wonder why our girlfriends mean so much to us, read on to find out. And if you just want to take a trip down the memory lane and reminisce about the good old days with your girls, this list will give you plenty of reasons to do just that.

1. No One Gets You Like Your Girls

I am sure all the women are nodding their heads in unison after reading this. I can’t tell you how many times it has happened to me where I have tried to explain a certain issue to my family or my husband and they just did not get what the problem was. Rather than listening to my problems, they would often accuse me of making a mountain out of a molehill. The same problem, when relayed in front of my girls, would get me hugs or kudos, depending on the context (rolls eyes).

This is something that happens so often that it seems to me like it is an unwritten rule of the girl code. Imagine this, you walk into a party, hand-in-hand with your gal pal. After a few minutes, you both get separated and suddenly you find yourself being eyed by the creepy loser in the corner. Before you can make a move, your gal pal rescues you and drags you to the dance floor. Multiple variations of this scenario have already happened to most women out there. We don’t need any knight in shining armor.

3. Shopping, Cooking, Party-Planning, Revenge-Plotting – There’s Nothing They Can’t Do

Not to sound sexist but women are, in general, better at multitasking than the guys. It could be because they are already expected to juggle multiple responsibilities. Now, who wouldn’t want a friend who is ready to party at night and plan a murder the next morning (of the cheating boyfriend)? Our girlfriends act as our love gurus and career pundits, all rolled into one. You’ve got a plan? Your girlfriends will be there.

4. They Form The Best Hype Gang

I have never felt underconfident around my girl gang. They were always ready to cheer me on and push me beyond my comfort zone. This included urging me to try a new look as well as cheering me from the sidelines of my wedding mandap. Can you imagine anyone being low when they have their personal cheer squad, no right?

5. My Girls Are Forever Party Ready

No one knows how to have fun as much as we girls do. Be it weddings or festivals, nothing would be half as much fun if we girls weren’t there to add chaar chaand to the occasion. Till this date, none of the birthday parties planned by my husband have managed to score as high on the party meter as the bachelorette planned by my girls.

Whether it’s the sleazy co-worker or the rude warden in the hostel, they know how it is. They are aware of your plight. They understand that the rules for women are different in the world and they help you rig it and win. In times when it’s becoming increasingly important to call out abusers and support other women, our relationships with our girlfriends hold a special place in our lives.

7. They Are Your Support System

When I moved to a different city after getting married, it was my girlfriends who would call me every other weekend to check in on me. They understood how alone I was, and they were there for me. Support systems like these work seamlessly and tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that our life goes on smoothly. After all, not all of us can afford a fairy godmother like Cinderella.

8. They Tell It Like It Is

I saved the best for the last. It’s these girlfriends who act as our conscience keepers. Having been an integral part of our lives, they are always in the loop. So when they see us making a potentially bad decision, they don’t hold back from calling us out on it.

It’s not that our relationships with our girlfriends are fleeting. In fact, as we grow older, we rely on them to act as pillars of support when life throws bigger challenges our way.
