If you were to calculate the intelligence of a person, the best way would be to get an IQ test done. Experts and psychologists have different ways to look at intelligence, and IQ is designed to assess the aptitude and ability of a person. Anything higher than 120-129 is considered superior IQ (1). However, IQ is not all about intelligence as it assesses specific skills such as reasoning, memory, and problem-solving. They don’t give a comprehensive picture of your abilities. Important traits such as creativity and emotional skills are outside the premises of IQ tests. Different backgrounds may have diverse levels of knowledge about test concepts and structures; therefore, low scores might not necessarily indicate lower intelligence. According to Professor and Physiologist Howard Garner, there are 11 kinds of intelligence. Curious about how intelligence works? Here are nine indicators of different types of intelligence. Read on to know if you have them all!

1. You’re Empathetic

Let’s begin by understanding the difference between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy is sparked out of your own understanding of the other person’s sorrows. But empathy is when you place yourself in the other person’s shoes and realize why they react or act the way they do. It is basically an in-depth analysis that is ingrained in your subconscious mind.

Empathy is often described as the ability or willingness to see things through another’s eyes. It is characterized by an increased level of empathy and acceptance of others’ experiences. Empathy is an essential component of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is your ability to recognize emotions and to express them in a healthy and productive manner. Emotionally intelligent people have an excellent awareness of the feelings and thoughts of others.

2. You Value Solitude

Do you need to take some time for yourself? You may already be aware of your introversion. But, you might not realize that fulfillment in your own company can also indicate intelligence. Introversion and intelligence both require alone time. You might think about problems, come up with new ideas, and ponder past experiences. Socializing is a great way to spend time with friends and family, but it also makes it harder to think introspectively and pursue your interests. You can have many close relationships and still cherish the time with your loved ones as long as you allow yourself enough time to be alone.

Having said that, you don’t have to be a loner in order to be called a genius. It is basically a healthy balance between enjoying your social time as well as being one with yourself when you are alone. Everyone loves a “me” time now and then, but only a few geniuses take it as an opportunity to better themselves.

3. Strong Self-Esteem

Self-awareness is not limited to knowing what you want from your interactions. Your identity is also affected by how you perceive yourself. A strong self-identity is a reflection of what you are. Here are a few signs that you have high self-esteem.

  •  You feel secure in who you are.
  •  You know where your strengths lie.
  •  You have the confidence to make decisions that are in line with your beliefs.
  •  You feel at ease expressing your opinions freely.
  •  You respect your boundaries.
  •  You choose a path that is compatible with your code or values.

4. Always Want To Learn More

Simple explanations may not satisfy you. Be it reading, art, or exploring foreign languages and cultures; asking thoughtful questions gets you to the core of an issue. You can spend hours digging into the web to discover a new interest or disassemble things to understand how they work. You might find your curiosity in other people’s lives and experiences. Curiosity leads to questions, and questions lead to detailed answers that add to your knowledge. Well, curiosity did not kill the cat after all but made it smarter *winks*.

5. Observe

You are often praised for your ability to observe. Intelligence can be defined as the ability to see and to follow. Do you have a good eye for patterns? Perhaps your observations are reflected in your creative work. Your ability to store and use specific pieces of information is called working memory. These are components of spatial-visual intelligence.

6. Good Body Memory Is A Must

What do we mean by body memory? Body memory is associated with certain impactful memories, maybe from your childhood, or a notable incident that has stayed with you always. This sensory storage helps you form relatable scenarios in the present as a result of your excellent ability to remember things. Intelligence may also be displayed in a physical setting. Perhaps you don’t know how to get there, but your body does. Patterns of movement are easy to remember and can be easily reproduced. This can help you excel in sports and other activities and improve your ability to focus on fine details.

7. You Are Capable Of Handling Any Challenges

It’s not always easy, but intelligence is built on adaptability. This trait describes your ability to adapt to changing situations and events. This trait can also be connected to resilience, which refers to your ability to overcome adversity. You might be able to face uncertainty head-on and stand firm against it. You bounce back quickly and are ready to continue trying, even when things don’t go your way.

8. You Are A Master At Keeping Peace

Strong interpersonal skills also indicate intelligence. If you were able to cheer up parents and calm siblings’ battles even when you were young, it signifies intelligence. Perhaps you can make peace between conflicting friends or coworkers. Although it may not be a sign of academic genius, many would agree that getting along with others is a valuable form of intelligence.

9. You Are Good At Controlling Your Emotions

Everybody experiences painful or unwelcome emotions from time to time. It’s part of everyday life. However, how you deal with these emotions can tell a lot about the emotional intelligence of your brain. People with high emotional intelligence are generally able to:

  •  Recognize complex emotions.
  •  Understanding how these emotions influence choices and behavior is critical.
  •  Respond to these emotions constructively.
  •  Express your feelings appropriately, you should practice self-control.
  •  Emotional regulation skills, like other aspects of emotional intelligence, can only be developed through practice. These tips will help you regulate your emotions better.

So now that you know your natural intelligence cannot be calculated with a few questions alone, it doesn’t matter if you weren’t deemed gifted in elementary school. It is also possible you spent your time in school daydreaming of distant worlds, sketching them in a notebook, or skipping school to help with family members or work. If you have these qualities, you are blessed with abundant intelligence.
