Life is a journey full of unforeseen lessons that await us. Just like in school, some of the subjects can be a breeze, some can be demanding, and some can make us want to quit school! But, like always, we persevere on with the support of good friends and teachers that we meet along the years, and, of course, the sagely (and sometimes unsolicited) advice of our loving parents. And somehow or the other, just when we think this is the year we won’t make it, we pass another grade and graduate.

So, in the spirit of this “life is like attending school” analogy, here’s a little cheat sheet to let you know the syllabus of the lessons that await you before you turn 30. That’s right! Inspired by a Quora post written by a life and productivity hacker, Max Lukominskyi, here are 20 lessons everyone should learn before they reach the big three-oh. Read on!

1. Life Has Already Commenced

Stop saying “When I grow up…” or “After I graduate…” Your life isn’t going to start after high school, college or when you get married. Life has already begun. The present isn’t an interlude. And it isn’t a trial version either. Every decision you take while you’re still breathing matters.

2. Online Friends Aren’t Your Real Friends

As harsh as that may sound, it’s the ugly truth. Regardless of how many likes, shares, and comments they shower you with, most of your so-called “friends” online will only exist, well, online. In times of need, don’t expect them to show up.

3. If You Want To Fall In Love, Prepare To Be Heartbroken

Love is a gamble. And a tough one at that. So, prepare to be hurt for it’s inevitable.

4. Studying Doesn’t End After Prom

Your relationship with learning doesn’t just end with high school or your college graduation. The acquisition of knowledge is a lifelong process. And if you’re not onboard, expect to be left behind.

5. Family Is The Most Important

They are the only people on this planet who love you unconditionally and will show up in your hour of need. Hence, treat these folks well and always appreciate them.

6. Your Weaknesses And Flaws Don’t Matter

You must learn to accept this truth. Stop bemoaning and wasting time and energy on what you aren’t good at. The only thing that matters at the end is what you can do – your strengths. Keep improving them.

7. Things Worth Doing Will Take You Years

Goals that are actually worth something will not come easily to you. They will take much longer to achieve than you will expect. But that’s how you know you’re chasing something worthy!

8. Growth Opportunities Lie Beyond Your Comfort Zone

Know the boundaries of your comfort zone well, so that you can learn to habitually leave it from time to time. That’s where all the real growth will take place – in your discomfort zone.

9. Broken Relationships Don’t Deserve Your Time

Do not waste energy, emotions or time on things you cannot fix. Learn to let go and move on.

10. The World Isn’t A Just Place

In fact, this world is full of injustice. And this injustice isn’t only restricted to strangers on the news. You will face your own share too during your lifetime. So, be prepared!

11. Luck Favors Hard Workers

Good things don’t just magically come to patient people twiddling their thumbs! Hard work, perseverance, and determination are the prerequisites you need to be eligible for luck.

13. You Cannot Have Everything And Be Everywhere

So, teach yourself to make the right decisions and only commit yourself to that which matters the most in the long run.

14. Everyone Who Is A Part Of Your Life Deserves Appreciation

15. Emotions And Experiences Are Your Greatest Investments

The conventional measures for success, such as fancy mansions and cars, are an illusion. Memories, experiences, and emotions – they are the measures of a quality life.
