Social media has this fantastic way of shedding light on stories that are often ignored by mainstream media. It has given the public a very strong tool to spread news among themselves without a middle player like news the channels. Even if it has many downsides to it, social media has helped us bring a lot of issues to the attention of the public; the issues that would have gotten lost in the media companies otherwise.
Recently, the story about a pedophile who was openly caught accosting, kissing and allegedly molesting a six-year-old street urchin in broad daylight went viral. The news spread like a wildfire on the internet after a video was recorded by a young man named Vivaan Tanwar and shared on Instagram.
What makes this story even sadder is that he paid the little girl a measly sum of 10 rupees and also admitted on camera that he did it because he was, in his own words —‘hungry’.

The video, which was shot at Connaught Place showed a mob gathered around the accused, yelling at him and trying to prod him to tell them why he did what he did and admit to it on camera. According to Vivaan Tanwar’s post, he and his friend were the first to spot the accused kissing and molesting the young girl and drew the attention of a crowd to the incident. After a couple of people gathered and held the accused in place, Vivaan started recording the video for proof.
In the video, you can see a cop questioning the man while an angry crowd is gathered around him. As ridiculous as it sounds, the man casually says that he paid the kid for a kiss because he was “hungry” at the beginning of the video. From his tone, you can clearly make out that he isn’t really ashamed of what he did. But when the people gathered around him start to get angry, he then starts blabbering about how he kissed the girl thinking of her as his daughter.
A woman is heard yelling at him in the background and asking him if he feels no shame toward his actions. The accused, who states he is unemployed is seen trying to escape the grasp of the crowd multiple times. The video then takes a turn for the worse when the man reaches for his zipper, pointing at his genitals and claiming that “it would have stood up if I was doing something wrong”. The cop then proceeds to slap the man gently, and the crowd starts yelling at him. The person shooting the video- Vivaan explains what exactly happened, in the video and in the post, which he shared on Instagram.
The Post
According to Vivaan’s post, the accused, who is around sixty years of age was kissing a little beggar girl forcefully while passing through Connaught Place Metro Station. He also claimed that the man was touching her private parts. Vivaan enquired into the girl’s life and found out that she is about six years old and begs at the metro station for her basic needs. When he found the girl, she was in tears, and Vivaan allegedly caught hold of the accused and handed him over to the cops. At the end of the long post explaining the situation, Vivaan quotes the accused saying “I had given her 10Rs for a kiss and for a touch on her private parts. I was hungry.” Vivaan asked his followers “What should we do to these kinds of pedophile people?”
Vivaan later accompanied the girl and her family to the police station to file an FIR, but the police took their own sweet time, and they were made to wait at the station for two hours! Unfortunately for the girl, Vivaan and her family were unable to file an FIR and left the station. Vivaan admitted to being heartbroken when he saw the little girl’s face as she was taken away by her parents.
What Price Would A Paedophile Have To Pay For His Crimes?
Let’s be honest. Child sexual abuse is a pretty rampant problem in our country. Due to the increasing number of incidents that have been occurring recently, the laws have been reformed. To deal with cases of child sexual abuse or CSA for short, the Government has brought in a special law called The Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012. The Act came into force in November of 2012. According to the law, The POCSO Act, 2012 is a comprehensive law to provide for the protection of children from the offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography, while safeguarding the interests of the child at every stage of the judicial process by incorporating child-friendly mechanisms for reporting, recording of evidence, investigation and speedy trial of offences through designated Special Courts. The Act defines a child as anyone under the age of eighteen. The Act covers different forms of abuse, including but not limited to penetrative and non-penetrative assault. In the case of this incident, the assault falls into the second category (1) (2).

The fact that this incident took place under broad daylight at a public place when the people of Delhi are bustling around, haunts us. Just imagine the guts of the man who would commit this crime in such a situation and feel all casual about it. This sick mentality isn’t really exclusive to one man and it’s something that we all have to fight against.
