Just like their IRL counterparts, the moms of cinema are a vastly diverse bunch. They are kind, resilient, selfless, protective, fierce, flawed, and complicated beings who would do anything to keep their children safe. Of course, not all of these movies are focused on a mother-child relationship, but they definitely cover the lengths a mother is willing to go for her child. While we may not always agree with everything that our mums have to say, there is one thing that we do agree on, and that is that they would do anything to make us happy. So here are seven films that showcase fierce mothers:

1. Beatrix Kiddo: Kill Bill Volume 1 And 2

Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2 follow the story of Beatrix Kiddo and how she is motivated by her quest for vengeance on the person who shot her and stole her infant daughter. Directed by the ever-so-talented Quentin Tarantino, Kill Bill is the ultimate revenge story that speaks about how revenge is a dish best served cold. In her attempts to seek revenge on the many who betrayed her, Beatrix has to undergo intensive training, single-handedly punch her way out of a grave, slice her way through a group of 88 henchmen and take out her betrayers accomplices. She does all this and leaves a blood-soaked trail behind her. Watch both films to find out if she is reunited with her darling daughter.

2. Meera Deshmukh: Drishyam

After Vijay Salgaonkar’s daughter is threatened and harassed by a peer of hers, he ends up involved in the cover-up of a crime he did not commit. When the peer disappears, Vijay finds out that he is the son of a tough-as-nails, no-nonsense cop, Meera Deshmukh, who will do anything to find her son. Despite being a grieving mother, we see her take on the role of a professional cop as she tries to separate her personal life from this close-to-home case. The film centers on her attempts to determine what happened to her son while Vijay tries his best to stay one step ahead of her.

3. Sarah Connor: Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Sarah Connor is a single mother who goes from being a damsel in distress in the original Terminator to being a baller machine-gun-wielding, sunglass-sporting warrior. Throughout the film, we see her put herself in the most dangerous situations to keep her son protected from the bad guys. Despite being abused by guards who kept her locked up, she fights against all odds to escape and reunite with her kid.

4. Meg Altman: Panic Room

Panic Room proves that if you’re stuck in a tight spot, you should have a mother with the courage and smarts of Meg Altman by your side. Meg is a mother who can keep a firm head over her shoulders even in the toughest of crises. Although she wears no cape and has no special gadgets or powers, her skill lies in her quick thinking and fierce protective spirit. She will do anything to keep her daughter out of the enemy’s hands and is willing to throw her own life on the line to do so.

5. Devki Sabarwal: Mom

The pivot of mom definitely has to be the strained relationship shared between Sridevi’s Devki and her stepdaughter. Mom will tug at your heartstrings at certain moments and fill you with rage and anger during others. Devki struggles through the film as she tries to earn the trust and love of a young girl who feels like she’s betraying her dead biological mother if she accepts her. It explores the complex dynamic between the two and is definitely a treat to tune in to.

6. Molly Weasley: The Harry Potter Series

Reliable mothers are tough to come across in the world of Wizardry. Hermione’s mother is a muggle who has her memory erased (temporarily), Harry’s mom is dead, and while Draco’s mother loves him, she isn’t the greatest influence. And then walks in Molly Weasley. The matriarch of the Weasley family, Molly is as caring and kind as she is formidable, knowledgeable, and stern. She’s affectionate and nurturing towards her children, but isn’t afraid to call them out and give them a good yelling when they step off the right path. You might perceive her as a homely housewife, but she is anything but that. You get to see her indulge in some epic duels and hurl some saucy insults in the final installment of the Harry Potter films.

7. Shubhangini Kapoor: Margarita With A Straw

Margarita With A Straw is probably one of Kalki’s most impressive pieces. However, it isn’t just her acting that drives the plot of the film along. We get to see the delightful Revathi play her mother, who shines as a seemingly average middle-class mother who dedicates her entire life to taking care of her child. She stoically drives her physically challenged daughter and pushes her to explore her dreams. The mother-daughter dynamic they share is so impressive; it will often leave us in tears as we recall our own relationships with our mothers.

We must acknowledge that every mom is unique, bright, and highly brilliant. No matter what stage of life your mother may be in, you know that she would do absolutely anything to keep you safe and give you the best possible life you can dream of. We hope you had an amazing mother’s day. Which of these movie mothers is your personal favorite? Please tell us all of your thoughts in the comment section below.
