The reality of being a mother is that it is one of the most challenging jobs in the world. Not only do you have to manage your own life, but you have to manage the life of your child as well. So it’s no wonder that many of us are highly attached to our mothers and cannot picture a life without them. When we’ve got our moms at our side, we know that we are invincible and can achieve anything that we put our minds to. So what better way to celebrate motherhood than to watch some incredible movies with our mothers? Even if you are not isolating with your mother at the moment, you can still celebrate with her by watching some fantastic movies online. There are tonnes of streaming services that offer you the ability to stream movies online with your mother. Or, you can even video call your mother and watch the movies with her to see her reactions to them. Here is a list of nine incredible films that celebrate the power and love of a mother:

1. Mother India (Jio Cinema, YouTube)

On the occasion of mother’s day, what better way than to begin a movie marathon than to celebrate with the mother of all movies (pun intended) — Mother India. The Nargis starrer is a movie involving a widowed mother who has to go through incredible hardships in order to raise her two sons. She is later placed in a terrible dilemma that will make her question everything she knows. This iconic movie is a must-watch for all lovers of good cinema!

2. Mom (Netflix)

The world was shocked to find out about the tragic death of Sridevi. Before the actress took her last breath, she left behind an incredible legacy of films — Mom, is one of them. Mom is a powerful, raw film that involves a mother who has to fight against all odds to avenge the horrific assault of her step-daughter. Sridevi’s incredible performance in the film won her the National Award for Best Actress. It was awarded to her posthumously.

3. Aamhi Doghi (Amazon Prime Video)

The heart-warming Marathi film explores an unlikely relationship between a young, headstrong girl and her stepmother, who is close in age to her. Although the pair start their relationships on a not-so-positive note, we see them forming a beautiful bond as the story goes on.

4. Lady Bird (Netflix)

Lady Bird is a film that should definitely be on your must-watch list. The film explores the complicated dynamic between a rebellious daughter and her strict, disciplinarian mother. Although her mother is tough as nails and often goes overboard, she does it out of love for her daughter and would do anything to give her a good life. The film is sensitive and beautifully crafted as it deals with the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship.

5. Dostana (Netflix)

Dostana, which is produced by Karan Johar, offers a somewhat different take on the concept of motherhood. It showcases a conservative mother, played by Kirron Kher, who has to cope with the news that her son is a gay man and is in a relationship with another man (spoiler alter: they’re only pretending). Although it takes her time to accept her son’s orientation, she puts aside her dreams of a beautiful Punjabi bahu, and learns to accept her son’s partner. She even gives her bangles to her would-be son-in-law as a sign of “shagun“. What makes this movie so special is the love that she has for her beloved son and how she is always ready to accept him, flaws and all.

6. Helicopter Eela (Disney + Hotstar)

Helicopter Eela is a quirky film involving a young single mother named Eela, played by Kajol, who goes overboard when it comes to parenting her college-aged son. After being abandoned by her partner, she tried her level best to raise her son single-handedly. Understandably so, she is paranoid about sending him off to college and takes things to another level by joining the same college as him. What ensues is a heart-warming and hilarious tale of the pair as they learn to navigate their relationship with one another.

7. Nil Battey Sannata (ZEE5)

Nil Battey Sannata is a beautiful story of a single mother who dropped out of school at a young age and has to take up menial jobs to make ends meet. She works extremely hard to ensure that her young daughter gets the education that she wishes she could have. To motivate her disinterested daughter to study, she starts studying in school herself so she can tutor her for the board exams. Although her daughter is initially restful of her decision and ashamed of their status in society, she eventually learns to accept her mother for all that she is.

8. Margarita With A Straw (Jio Cinema, YouTube)

Kalki plays a young woman with cerebral palsy who gets involved in a relationship with a blind Pakistani girl when she goes off to college. Although her mother is initially taken aback by the news that her daughter is also attracted to women, she sticks by her side. Although her mother, played by South Indian actress, Revathi, was brought up in a different time, it’s beautiful to see the amazing dynamic the duo share. This heart-warming (and heart-breaking) film explores many complex issues like disability rights, cancer, and LGBTQ+ relationships. We’d advise you to keep some tissue papers around because you’re definitely going to need them.

9. Village Rockstars (Netflix)

Village Rockstars is a National Award-winning Assamese film that involves a young village girl and her big dreams of starting a rock band. Although her widowed mother doesn’t have the resources to fuel her dream, she tries her best to support her young child and fights against the patriarchal order of their village to do so. This film is a must-watch and teaches us that no dream is too big, no matter how small we may seem.

Moms are amazing, aren’t they? No matter where we go in life and what we do, our mothers will always stand by us through thick and thin, and that’s what makes them so unique.
