Which is why the loss of eyelashes is so very tragic. We all lose those inevitable few from time to time. However, if you’ve been experiencing an unnaturally rapid loss of pretty hairs from your eyelids, there could be another reason behind it other than good old gravity.

Sometimes, it isn’t some insidious medical condition, but actually, a simple mechanical problem that may be causing frequent loss of lashes. The good news? You can fix the problem in a jiffy. All you require is to find that guilty culprit:

  • Are you rubbing your eyes more frequently than usual? If you’ve recently suffered from an eye infection or skin allergy, then you very well could be frequently giving in to the itch and aggressively rubbing your eyelids. This may have unwittingly led to the displacement and fall of your eyelashes.Solution: Seek treatment for your infection and medication to alleviate the worst of your allergy symptoms. In the meanwhile, resist the temptation to rub your peepers.
  • Are you washing off your eye makeup daily? Bad hygiene practices such as inconsistent eye makeup removal can irritate the delicate skin of your eyelid, which can lead to physical rubbing and loss. Alternatively, removing eye makeup too aggressively can also lead to eyelash loss.Solution: Always ensure you remove your makeup before you head to bed. Also, try using a gentle but effective eye makeup remover such as chamomile water.
  • Are you guilty of repeatedly using an eyelash curler? Tsk tsk. Eyelash curlers are notorious for pulling out lashes, even if you are curling them after applying mascara.Solution: Go easy on the curler. Stick to curling when you have falsies on and need to align them.

It is entirely possible that you may be suffering from a medical condition or could be taking certain medications that may be responsible for your alarmingly rapid loss of eyelashes. The following are the most likely reasons:

      • Thyroid dysfunction: An underactive or even an overactive thyroid can very well cause the loss of eyelashes (1, 2). However, this condition is manageable if the patient adheres to treatment.
      • Blepharitis: This is a condition where your eyelids are inflamed. It could be because of a bacterial (group A staphylococcus) infection, scalp dandruff or even acne (3).
      • Mite infection (D. folliculorum): Infection caused by the bite of an obligate human ectoparasite that leads to the inflammation of eyelids and loss of eyelashes (4).
      • Chemotherapy: Alopecia, or hair loss, is a common side effect of taking chemotherapeutic drugs (5).
      • Trichotillomania Tangle: This is a psychological condition where people pull out their own eyelashes as a response to stress.
      • Alopecia Areata: Is an autoimmune response that leads to the loss of hair. Although it most commonly affects the scalp, it could affect any hair-bearing region of your body, including the eyelashes (6).
      • Allergies to Mascara: If your eyes turn swollen, watery, and itchy each time you apply mascara, you may very well be harboring an allergy to the ingredients in your mascara tube.

The following are a list of all-natural remedies recommended by experts that can strength brittle and dry eyelashes prone to breakage.

      1. Castor Oil: Not only can castor oil help prevent breakage of your eyelashes; it can also boost their growth! Soak a cotton wool in castor oil and dab onto eyelashes every night before you head to bed.
      2. Vaseline: Petroleum jelly has been a go-to remedy for eyelash strength and growth for years. Empty some into a used, cleaned mascara bottle and apply onto your eyelashes with a clean mascara wand every night before you sleep.
      3. Coconut oil: Another great oil to boost the strength, shine, and growth of your hairs is good old coconut oil! Dab some on a cotton wool and gently massage your lids, allowing your eyelashes to soak in all that goodness. Use this remedy every night as you prepare to sleep.
      4. Lemon Peel: The high vitamin C and citric acid content in lemon are widely acknowledged to strengthen the roots of eyelashes. Place your lemon peel directly under the sun for 24 hours in order to dry. Grind the dried peel into a fine powder. Now, mix 1 tsp of the dried powder with a few drops of olive oil until you get a smooth solution. Pour this mixture into an old, used mascara bottle and apply each night with a clean mascara wand onto eyelashes.
      5. Green Tea: This antioxidant and flavonoid-rich tea will boost the growth of your lashes. Simply dip a cotton wool in a cup of freshly brewed but cooled green tea and dab onto your lashes before you head to bed. Leave it on overnight and rinse in the morning.

You don’t have to compromise with the health of your lashes anymore. Follow any of the above remedies and regain the strength of your most winsome feature – your eyelashes.

Stay beautiful!
