Moms are superheroes, and anybody who says any different is in denial about their powers. They can juggle their family lives, their careers, their friendships, and so many more things at one time and make it look so easy! Just as we look up to our own moms in real life, there are plenty of reel moms on OTT platforms that are pretty awe-inspiring too. From Joyce Byers in Stranger Things to Anjana Menon in Four More Shots Please, these moms have proven that they will do everything it takes to give their kids a good life. These mothers have taught us that being a mom is not all sunshine and roses and that even the best mother in the world is only human. So let’s take a look at nine of our favorite OTT moms:
1. Vartika Chaturvedi In Delhi Crime (Netflix)
Played by Shefali Shah, Vartika Chaturvedi is the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the city of Delhi. The series follows the devastating assault of a young woman on a moving bus and how the Delhi police band together to nab the culprits. We see Vartika stuck between two worlds as she tries to convince her daughter that the city she loves is not as bad as people say it is while dealing with the aftermath of the assault and extensive media coverage.
2. Maya Sarabhai In Sarabhai Vs. Sarabhai (Disney+ Hotstar)
While many may see Maya Sarabhai as a haughty, socialite, upper-class woman, she is so much more than that! As the matriarch of the wealthy and illustrious Sarabhai family, she runs her entire family with a sense of ease. Her older son marries a middle-class woman, and Maya often has to step in and try to “teach” her daughter-in-law some of her upper-class ways. Maya’s signature catchphrase, “It’s so middle class”, is something that is deeply etched in our memories.
3. Xiomara “Xo” Villanueva In Jane The Virgin (Netflix)
Xiomara is the supportive, cool mom we all want in our lives. After getting pregnant by her boyfriend in her teens and having her daughter at a very young age, she does her very best to raise her daughter and give her the best life she could possibly have. Even when her daughter is accidentally impregnated, Xiomara is by her side to help her out in any way possible.
4. Joyce Byers In Stranger Things (Netflix)
Joyce Byers is the sometimes overprotective single mother of Will and Johnathan. Despite not always being the most reliable of people, she has her head in the right place and tries her level best to find her lost son. She is someone who is trustworthy and always lends people a shoulder to cry on. Her pragmatic, hardworking, and loving nature is something that is so common in mothers and is what makes us admire her so much.
5. Claire Dunphy In Modern Family (Disney+ Hotstar)
Claire Dunphy is the hilarious matriarch of the Dunphy family. Despite her house being super chaotic and sometimes downright dysfunctional, Claire does a fantastic job of raising her kids while balancing her own career and goals. Claire is the mom everyone can count on, and although she tries to act like the cool mom, everyone knows she’s too neurotic to be one.
6. Catelyn Stark In Game Of Thrones (Disney+ Hotstar)
It’s easy to judge Catelyn Stark’s character for her indifference towards Jon Snow, but her love for her children and family is what makes her so unique. Catelyn will do everything she possibly can to make her kids feel safe and give them the world.
7. Suchitra Tiwari In Family Man (Prime Video)
Suchi plays the clueless wife of an undercover spy. As far as she is aware, her husband works a regular 9-5 like every ordinary middle-class man. However, her narrative has to do with much more than just being a wife. When her husband is away on work duties, she often has to take on the role of being a father to her children as well, and we get to see her sharing some beautiful tender moments with her kids. She has plenty of ups and downs throughout the series, which makes her someone who is easy to identify with.
8. Anjana Menon In Four More Shots Please (Prime Video)
Anjana is a tough-as-nails lawyer who also has to deal with the pressures of being a single mother and maintaining cordial relations with her ex-husband. While she has the support of her three best friends, it’s pretty apparent that she is the most mature of the lot and has added responsibilities that the others don’t. Later on, she has to also deal with the introduction of her ex’s new girlfriend into the lives of her daughter and herself.
9. Meira In Mentalhood (Zee5)
It’s not easy being a working mother. Meira is the perfect example of that overworked and overwhelmed mom who often struggles to maintain an excellent work-life and family life balance. Although she can sometimes get a little too caught up in maintaining that perfect happy family outlook and often gets a bit too paranoid, there are plenty of moments where we find her pretty relatable.
Although we see our own mothers as superheroes, we do love seeing these OTT moms in action. In the end, every mother is unique in their own special way, and we cannot help but be impressed with the way they handle things.
