Let’s be real; wearing a saree is not an easy task to accomplish. Every person who has donned a saree would have struggled to get it right the first time. When we watch our moms effortlessly drape sarees across themselves, we feel so inspired to give it a shot ourselves. However, that is easier said than done. Donning and rocking a saree are two things that can be accomplished with the right amount of hard work and dedication. Here are a couple of challenges people face when they wear a saree for the first time:

1. Which Saree Style To Pick

Picking the right style of saree to wear is one of the most challenging tasks one can accomplish. It’s tough to guess what is the right fit for your body as you have to find one that works for your figure and complexion. There are hundreds of saree styles (that we are aware of), but it can be hard to pick the one that would suit you best. You can look into Tussars, Banarasis, Kanchipuram silks, Kasavu and so many more types of sarees.

2. It Feels Like Rocket Science

Let’s be real; draping a saree isn’t rocket science, but it definitely does feel like it. When you first try to drape your saree, you probably feel like you might need the help of your entire family line to drape it. You might call your mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, or maybe even dad for help because it can be quite complicated for a newbie. Thankfully, the world wide web comes to our rescue and always gives us the answers we need. Look up a few YouTube tutorials to find out how you can drape your saree.

3. Finding The Perfect Accessory

With a saree, finding the right accessory can be quite the task as you need to pay attention to not just the colors of your saree but the style of the purse or clutch that will make quite a difference.

4. The Correct Way To Walk

This is when the real problem arises. Walking in a saree and heels honestly deserves more recognition than what some models do on catwalks! It is quite difficult to tie your saree in a way that prevents you from tripping over the material. Ah well, there’s no beauty without pain, is there?

5. How To Make The Saree Accentuate Your Figure

If you’re a short person, you know exactly how difficult it is to drape a full nine yard piece of cloth without feeling matronly or bulky. Many women don’t want to wear sarees because they are afraid that they may look old-fashioned or plain boring. In the end, we all want to get a saree that makes us look curvy and not bulky. However, that would take a specific time for people to achieve.

6. Washroom Problems

Every new person who wears a saree is quick to realize that going to the washroom and unwrapping yourself from a saree is something that is quite a hindrance. Many women will even ask their close friends to accompany them to the bathroom and help them drape their saree after finishing with their business. In fact, it almost becomes a girls’ trip!

7. Not Poking Yourself With Safety Pins

If you’re trying to drape your saree by yourself, you run the risk of poking your body with one of the pins in the process of wearing your saree. You’re also often scared that your magnificent pinning will go to waste, and you might end up hurting yourself by sitting on your pins. Fret not, though; they’re called safety pins for a reason.

8. Trying To Run In A Saree

Look, you never know when you’re going to have to make a run for it, and we all want to be comfortable while runnings. Sure, it’s not impossible to run in a saree, but you would have to drape the saree in a way that it doesn’t get in the way of you running. Of course, this does not mean you break into a run at the first sight of trouble. A real saree wearer accepts the accidental wardrobe malfunctions with pride and doesn’t let others shame them!

9. The “Pallu” Problem

If there’s something that annoys saree wearers universally, it’s a slipping “pallu”. There’s nothing more frustrating than having to adjust your pallu every ten minutes to look good for pictures. Every saree wearer will tell you how frustrating it is to pin up your saree, and it almost feels like you want to pin your body to the saree to keep it in place. Well, you’re not alone. A pallu that slips might be a mood killer, but hey, nothing a few safety pins can’t fix!

And finally, every saree user knows the comfort of ditching the saree and dropping it to the floor (or folding it neatly if that’s your wish) as soon as they reach home. When you do get home, you feel like you’ve almost accomplished something after spending hours in a saree and heels. At the end of the day, every saree is as unique as its wearer, and you should definitely try experimenting with styles!
