India is known for its incredible beauty and diversity. Just as our country is known for its variety, it is also known for its gorgeous weddings and unique wedding garments. Every state in India has a culture of its own, and this is highly evident when you observe the marital traditions that are followed by those who live here. Thanks to this diversity, you will never find two brides who look alike. Brides from Muslim families will accentuate their eyes with kohl, while brides from Punjabi families will be spotted in stunning and simple pastel hues. So if you’re wondering what bridal looks women from different parts of India follow, you’ve come to the right place:

1. The Punjabi Bride

Brides of Sikh and Punjabi heritage are often seen wearing simple yet super elegant pastel-colored lehengas. Keeping their outfits simple will give them space to create a glamorous yet soft makeup look, especially a look that plays up their eyes. They can add glitter and shimmer on their eyes and use false eyelashes to make their eyes look open and welcoming. They often wear a lipstick shade that will match the color of their lehenga, and since their hair is covered in a dupatta when they visit the gurdwara, they prefer a simple updo and a maang tikka.

2. The Christian Bride

Brides from Christian families often have to rush to their wedding reception after the church ceremony is over. This doesn’t leave them much time to change their makeup in between the two events. So they usually stick to keeping their makeup minimal, and it’s a good idea as their ensemble is all-white. They will often opt for a smokey eye and accentuate it with eyeliner and a hint of blush on the cheeks. Based on the bride’s preferences, she can opt for a simple pink or red pout. Their hair is usually left in a half-up style or left loose.

3. The Bengali Bride

Bengali brides like to wear extremely traditional designs. Their makeup involves more than just a highlighter or liner— classic Chandan designs take center stage when it comes to Bengali brides. A Bengali bride can choose a simplistic Chandan design or opt for something a little more complex and elaborate. With winged eyeliner, accentuated eyes, dewy makeup, and the vibrant colors of red and gold, it’s no wonder that they look like beautiful dolls.

4. The Muslim Bride

When it comes to Muslim brides, they like to focus on their eyes and opt for heavily kohled eyes and a dewy look for their makeup. Depending on their outfits, Muslim brides can opt for a bright pout or even a nude one. They usually prefer a simple side-swept hairstyle with a passa attached to one side of it.

5. The Rajasthani Bride

A traditional Rajasthani bride’s look involves a heavy-handed kohl application on her lower and upper lash lines along with matte makeup and a lovely bright pout. She adds a touch of tradition to her look with a Borla as a maang tikka. Although they keep their makeup subtle yet with a glamorous touch, they prefer keeping their hair in an updo and using elegant accessories.

6. The North-Eastern Bride

Brides from a North-Eastern background like to keep their makeup minimal. They prefer doing so as they want their exquisite traditional outfits to be the center of attention. They often style their hair in a simple updo and like to wear hair accessories native to the region they originate from. They prefer to accentuate their almond eyes by adding a touch of color to their eye makeup. Blush pink cheeks and a bright, bold lip complete their bridal look.

7. The Maharashtrian Bride

The Maharashtrian bride will have to take her accessories into consideration when she is planning her makeup look for the day. They wear a mundavalya (string) across their foreheads and a traditional nath. Keeping their updo in a classic style, these brides will often be spotted wearing metallic shadow along with thick eyeliner, dramatic lashes, and more often than not, a red lip or a bright pink one along with their nine yard-long sarees.

8. The Sindhi Bride

Sindhi brides stick to applying a soft smokey eye look along with a heavy-handed application of dramatic lashes and shimmer on their wedding day. They will also make use of highlighter and blush along with a blush-toned nude lip to complete their look. The shine and shimmer of the makeup will depend entirely on the personal beauty aesthetic of the bride.

9. The South Indian Bride

Although South India is a lot more than just one culture, certain facets of marital beauty are definitely common. Most brides from the South prefer to wear their hair in long braids and attach fresh flowers to their locks. They also wear an accessory known as Jada and a kamarband to complete their look. These brides hand draw their bindi using liquid kumkum and play up their eyes with bronze and gold eye makeup. Their final look is complete with eyeliner and kohl-rimmed eyes, along with long eyelashes.

Regardless of which part of the country you choose to visit or spend time in, you will find some incredible and unique cultures. While some brides may choose to mix and match their traditional outfits, others choose to stick to their roots and not change things up.
