Should Nose Piercing Be Done On The Left Side Or The Right Side?

Remember the romance epic movie, Veer-Zara? Before you all start reminiscing how good the king of romance, Shah Rukh Khan, was in the movie, I would like you to remind yourself of its equally amazing female lead, Preity Zinta. I remember watching this movie and being completely smitten by her. The chirpy and vivacious actress portrayed a young woman hailing from a distinguished family of Pakistan.

Her look in the movie was characterized by long salwar-kameez which she wore with great élan and a nose ring, which she wore in her left nostril. While the clothes that she wore suited her a great deal, it was the nose ring that completed her look. To this day, I am completely baffled by how a small modification changed her look completely.

Well, cut to today, feeling a little bored with my look, I decided to get a nose piercing so as to add a little character to my otherwise plainjane look. Now, the issue that I was facing was deciding the side that I should get pierced. Thinking that it was just a matter of preference, I still ventured on the cyberspace to see if one side reaped more style benefits than the other, you know just to be sure. The results of this style quest were as follows:

1. Science Advises You To Get It On The Left Side

Body piercing has traditionally considered a form of accessorizing and it is often governed by one’s taste and preferences, at least in other parts of the world. However, in this side of the world, piercings in the nose and ears are pretty much considered the cultural norm, especially when it comes to women.

In India, most women get their nose pierced before getting married. However, most of them get it on their left side. While it may seem like a coincidence, it seems it has the backing of science.

According to Ayurveda, getting a body piercing has beneficial effects that are akin to that of acupuncture and one of the many sanskaar ceremonies (cultural ceremonies that mark major milestones in one’s life from conception to death) also involve ear piercing. It is said that piercing the ear helps in stimulating the body’s immune mechanism and protects it against infections. Similarly, getting your nose pierced on the left side is supposed to relieve you of menstrual cramps and also help you with childbirth (1). So, unless you happen to be a man, the left is the way to go for you!

2. It Depends On The Shape Of Your Face

At the outset, we would like to say your body, your rules, so you can go for whichever side you prefer, keeping in mind considerations like your good side, etc. However, if you want to maximize your hotness quotient, there are a few considerations that you need to keep in mind.

Notice the shape of your face, whether it is symmetrical or asymmetrical. This is not to say that one type is better than the other, both are equally beautiful. However, those with symmetrical faces can choose whichever side they please as the symmetrical features will go quite well with the piercing on either side.

Now, if you happen to have an asymmetrical shape, we would advise you to buy a fake nose ring and try putting on both sides to see which side pairs well with your facial features and then decide.

3. Side Doesn’t Matter; There Are Other Options

Another creative option that we have to offer you is don’t go for either side. Instead, you can add to your hotness quotient by getting your septum pierced. Yup, it will be different and rather uncommon, but hey if anyone can pull it off it’s you! Instead of going for the more common nostril piercing, go for this rather unconventional mode of accessorizing, you’re bound to create waves. And it’s not even gender-specific, even guys can go for this.

Or

If the thought of getting your nose pierced gives you sleepless nights with the image of the needle or gun piercing your skin and making you go through the agony of pain, we have a different option for you. You can go for the fake nose rings or nose pins and wear them on whatever side you feel like at a given time.

Tl; DR:If you want to get your nose pierced and you’ve already decided on the side that you prefer, then throw caution to the wind and go ahead and get it pierced! After all, it’s all about self-expression! Do you have any other suggestions about getting body piercings? Which side do you prefer when it comes to getting your nose pierced?
