1. Coorg, Karnataka:
Affectionately called ‘The Scotland of India’, Coorg is a tranquil little hill station town located in Northern Karnataka. It is nestled in between the Western Ghats and is well known for its varied wildlife, world class coffee, special Coorgi style pork roast, gorgeous hilltops, and scenic locations like waterfalls and lakes. Coorg is also popular for its warrior clan- The Kodavas. Coorg is covered in scenic landscapes, huge coffee plantations and lush greenery. With misty forests and stunning panoramas, Coorg is the perfect place for couples seeking a romantic weekend getaway. Adventure seekers and daredevils or even for people who like spending their holidays in solitude will have a good time in Coorg. Most Coorg lovers suggest spending a good three days there in order to truly enjoy the experience and hospitality. Hence, we would suggest exploring this serene location over a long weekend.
2. Munnar, Kerala:
Another hill station burrowed in the lap of the Western Ghats and located at an average elevation of 1700 meters above sea level, Munnar is one of South India’s most popular and serene hill stations. Popularly known as the Kashmir of the South, Munnar is a part of the Idukki district in Northern Kerala and is also a popular honeymoon destination.
It enjoys a favorable and pleasant climate all throughout the year and is famous for its lush green hills and tea plantations. Since it is located in the Western Ghats, Munnar is also home to some of the most rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. Some of Munnar’s must visits include: Rajamalai National Park, Mattupetty Dam, Chithirapuram, Marayur, and Atukkad Falls.
3. Nainital, Uttarakhand:
Nestled in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand, Nainital is a gorgeous hill station known for its opulent Emerald lake that is surrounded by quaint old cottages, lush green hills and bustling markets. Its special charm includes everything from sailing to exploring ancient temples and heritage buildings to breathtaking views from the valley side.
Besides being known as the City of Lakes, Nainital also has a large number of other super scenic locations. The most famous being Tiffin Top, an idyllic sunrise point that you can trek to. It is located about 4 kms away from the heart of Nainital and makes for a spectacular sight. If shopping and collecting souvenirs are more your thing, make sure you stop by the Tibetan market to purchase some unique trinkets and items. If you’re more of a laid back kind of person, you could visit the Nainital Ropeway that gives you a bird’s eye view of the hill station. There are tonnes of other places one can pay visit to as well.
4. Shimla, Himachal Pradesh:
Monikered the ‘Queen of the Hills’, this exquisite town is the capital of the Northern state of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla is known for its majestic snow clad mountains, stunningly rich greenery, and its alluring lakes. The British were so captivated by Shimla’s timeless beauty, that they made it their summer capital.
Shimla is showered with extremely scenic locations. Some of which include The Christ Church, which was built in 1857 and is an exemplary example of Elizabethan Architecture, Camp Potters’ Hill, a set of tree houses, wooden cottages, and tents located in the heart of a forest.
5. Ooty, Tamil Nadu:
The scenic hill station lies near the Nilgiris in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu. Ooty is known for its dazzling ‘blue mountains,’ that gain their iconic colors from the misty blue haze emanating off Eucalyptus trees. The Botanical Gardens, Tea Factory, Pykara River, and Mudumalai National Park are just a few of the breathtaking must visit locations.
6. Darjeeling, West Bengal
Famous for its tea plantations, rich culture and view of the Kanchenjunga range of mountains, Darjeeling lies peacefully underneath this snowy Himalayan giant. Located just 78 kilometres away from Siliguri, this town is known for its hospitality, rich valleys and gorgeous national parks- Neora Valley and Singalila NP.
7.Shillong, Meghalaya
Shillong is home to several waterfalls, rolling hills, whimsical little house and lush parks. Surprisingly, Shillong is a lot easier to get to than other hill stations and the nearest airport is located barely 40 kms away. The Khasi tribe of Meghalaya calls Shillong their home and they are known for their hospitality. Another unique location is the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Culture which contains interesting artifacts and rich history. Don’t forget to stop by the majestic Spread Eagle Falls for a soothing and tranquil experience.
