How To Go About A Post-Diwali Detox

By Shirin MehdiShirin Mehdi  •

Diwali, the most celebrated festival in India, has just gone by. And as we all know, along with the gold, silks, and lights, there has been an overload of pure ghee and rich mithais. When it comes to Diwali, overeating and eating unhealthy is inevitable. Almost always, the Diwali binging starts a few days before the festival and continues till a few days after. And who is to stop you? It is Diwali, after all! Once the festivities are done, the guilt sets in, and you tend to go into an extreme mode, such as fasting. Yes, a detox is essential, but it needs to be done in a proper way. Starving yourself is an absolute no-no. So, let’s take a look at the right way to flush out all the toxins.

1. Load Up On Water

Detox means flushing out the toxins. The best way to flush out toxins is to drink lots of water. Drink up to three liters of water every day, and avoid drinking aerated drinks and packaged juices. These drinks are loaded with sugar and will do anything but detoxify your system. Drinking a glass of lukewarm water post a meal is a good idea. It will induce proper digestion. Coconut water is also a good supplement if you don’t like to drink too much water. Adding a few drops of lemon to water also enhances the detox process. Drinking a glass of lukewarm water with a few drops of lemon or amla every morning will work wonders in detoxifying your system.

2. Start Working Out

Once you are done with the festivities, you need to slowly get back to your exercise routine. Exercise is a great way to bring your body back to normalcy and make it healthy. If you don’t already exercise, it is a good idea to start right away. You could start by taking a walk in the park, or try zumba or yoga if you need an instructor for motivation. But, starting off with an exercise is an absolute must.

3. Cut Out The Fried Foods And Sugar

This is probably the first thing you need to do when you have had an overload of sweets and fried stuff preceding the detox. Cut down on sugar and oil. It is the fastest way your digestive system will recover. Sugar and oil are harmful. So, whether a detox or not, it is best to minimize or eliminate their consumption.

4. Do Not Starve Or Diet

Starving yourself, or indulging in crash diets is the worst thing you can do after you have had an overdose of unhealthy food. There is no way it will nullify the effect; it will, in fact, only harm your body. These diets usually lead to fatigue, acidity, and/or giddiness. Not only this, your muscles will degenerate rapidly and your metabolic rate will drop, which will cause you to gain weight instead of losing it. Indulge in a balanced diet, and stick to whole grains, vegetables, and lots of fruits. Make sure you eat light and on time.

Life is a celebration. Festivals like Diwali only add to the festivities, but a balance is very important. So, while it is ok to go all out and live it up, it is essential you detoxify later. But again, that doesn’t mean you resort to extreme measures. Listen to your body and do the best for it.
