Priyanka did not have it easy during her early days. Although she came from a financially well-off background as both of her parents worked in the Indian army, she was subjected to immense racism and body shaming when she was a young teen growing up in the US. Priyanka spoke about how in the 10th grade she had classmates who referred to her as “brownie” because of her golden brown skin and told her to “go back on the elephant she came on”. Priyanka, who was born in Bihar, was sent to the United States to stay with her aunt when she was around 13 years old. She attended high schools in Massachusetts, Iowa, and Queens in New York.

When asked why she wanted to bring attention to racial injustice, Priyanka spoke about how she did not want her future children to grow up in a world where they had to undergo what she had to go through. She added that she believed racist behavior was learned and that it could be changed if someone took active effort in doing so. She had stated that although she was bullied immensely, she had an “innate sense of self” that was instilled in her through her parents and their upbringing. Priyanka has also opened up about being body shamed and targeted for her facial features. She once spoke about how someone had mocked her for her nose when she was barely 18 or 19 years old and had asked her to get her nose fixed as it was “disproportionate to her face”.

Despite facing all of these problems

Despite facing all of these problems, Priyanka strived on and went on to enter the world of fashion as a successful model. She was crowned as Miss World 2000. Her incredible physique, work ethic and stunning skin tone won her praise from many in the fashion industry and it was eventually her big ticket into films. Priyanka has walked multiple fashion shows for major brands and designers like Manish Malhotra, Neeta Lulla, Blenders Pride Fashion Week, and even Lakme Fashion Week. Priyanka has also worked on a film called Fashion that exposed the often shady and seedy underbelly of the Indian fashion industry.

Priyanka has come a long way from her days struggling to make it as a model. It’s wonderful to see her strive to make a positive impact and change for the world through her immense reach and star power. She is one of the few Indian celebrities who strive to make a change in not just our country but on the global front. We hope to see her follow many other sustainable and helpful endeavors to make the world a better place. Tell us all of your thoughts on this article in the comment section below.
