The Quantico actress attended the Grammy night to show support for her husband, Nick Jonas and his brothers, who were nominated for Best Pop/Duo Performance. For her appearance, the actress donned an exquisite Ralph and Russo ensemble that featured a dramatic plunging V-neck that dropped down to her navel which she dressed up with a navel ring. While the outfit won the actress a lot of praise from celebrities and fans alike, it also won a lot of negative comments from haters. Many found the outfit a little too risque and proceeded to pass unnecessary and unwarranted comments on Priyanka and how she did not “respect Indian culture”.

Fashion designer Wendell Rodricks’ chimed in with “@priyankachopra nailed it at the Grammys 2020. Truly bold and beautiful in this @ralphandrusso couture fringed gown where the neckline goes all the way from LA to Cuba. Love it.”

The fashion designer then went on to put up and later delete a post sharing a collage of Priyanka sitting down in a selfie with sister-in-laws Danielle Jonas and Sophie Turner. In the post, he commented on how his previous post complimenting the actress was sarcastic. Read his post below:

Rann actress, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi put down a long post appreciating Priyanka for not hiding her belly and for sending out a message to women to be bold and beautiful. Suchitra responded to Wendell Rodricks’ post with “Was so upset to see this post on insta by Wendel Rodricks whose work I otherwise have a modicum of respect for. I think the fact that Priyanka is not trying to hide her belly with her clutch is what makes this pic so beautiful. Makes her the rockstar she is. Her confidence is an inspiration for every woman. Women have been so enslaved by men’s opinion of how women should look this photograph of Priyanka to me at the world’s most publicized event is the height of liberation. You go girl and keep rocking it. I was never a fan of the lady but this pic has surely made me one.” Suchitra added that women weren’t meant to be flat-chested and have no curves and spoke about how real women have breasts, water retention and that they still rock and roll. She added that women weren’t made to be a part of some teenage boys’ perverted fantasy. You can read her full post below.

Now forced into hot water, the fashion designer took to Instagram to share another post and captioned it with, “For all those that said some really nasty things about me body shaming, here is my retort. Did I say anything about her body? No. Many women did. I just said the dress was wrong for her despite it being couture. It was more dress shaming than body shaming. Stop this sermon from high and read the post before you speak. There is an age to wear some clothes. Men with huge bellies should not wear tight T-shirts. Same with women who wear minis past a certain age. If you don’t have it, don’t flaunt it. I stopped wearing Bermudas as I have a few varicose veins. Don’t make every issue body shaming, sexist or whatever. Or you can be false and fake resorting to being politically correct and not be truthful. If you don’t like my posts unfriend me.”

This post infuriated fans further with many requesting him to “just apologize already”. Many were upset at the fact that despite being called out, he went above and beyond to explain himself and make matters worse.

While it’s alright to have an opinion on something, poking fun at someone for their choice of outfit on a public forum like Instagram is cyber-bullying, plain, and simple. To those commenting about how she isn’t following Indian culture: Who made you the gatekeepers of what is considered culturally appropriate or not? We live in 2020 and the borders are getting blurrier. Priyanka Chopra is an internationally renowned actress who can march to her tune. Do you think it’s okay for fashion designers to put up “unflattering” pictures of female celebrities and critique their wardrobe choices? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
