Whether you are a fan of Bollywood and are interested in watching a few regional films or you’re a hardcore fan of regional films, there’s no denying that the regional film industry has some good talent. Just as we got to see Samantha Akkineni in Family ManSeason 2, we got to see plenty of regional talent take the world of OTT and Bollywood by storm. From participating in nail-biting storylines and delivering compelling and fresh performances, these non-Hindi speaking actors and their films/series are a breath of fresh air from typical Bollywood tropes:
1. Samantha Akkineni
We cannot begin this list without talking about Samantha Akkineni. This classy Southern actress recently made headlines for delivering an exemplary performance in season 2 of TheFamily Man. Samantha plays the role of Eelam fighter, Raji and we have to say that this is one of the best roles we have seen her in. Besides stealing the limelight on The Family Man,Samantha has a solid career in Tamil and Telugu films and has worked on Oh! Baby, Jaanu, Super Deluxe, and Manmadhudu 2. She has quite a few future projects in store for fans and we will next get to see her inKaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal andShaakuntalam.
2. Vijay Deverakonda
Vijay plays the titular character in Arjun Reddy and has the personality of a bad boy we just hate to admit we love. He has played significant roles and won us over with his incredible versatility and talent as an actor. Beginning his career with Nuuvila, Vijay gained popularity while playing a role as a supporting character in Yavade Subramanyam. Once he was in the spotlight there was no turning back and he was soon propelled into superstardom. Some of his most notable works include Mahanati, NOTA, andDear Comrade.
3. Priyamani
We all know of Priyamani as Suchitra from The Family Manbut before she worked on the show, she already had a huge fanbase in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam cinema. Priyamani debuted in a Telugu film called Evare Atagaaduand her stardom gained in popularity over the years. She has acted in movies like the Saint and Chaarulatha, Raam Raavan, Raavanan, Pranchiyettanand more. She has also been a judge on a variety of dance reality shows.
4. Parvathy Thiruvothu
We cannot miss Parvathy Thiruvothu when we speak about Malayalam cinema. The talented and charismatic actress has starred in films like Notebook, Poo, Charlie, Uyare, City of God and Virus. For her excellent skills, she received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress two times and even the IFFI Best Actor Award (Female) at the 48th International Film Festival of India.
5. Dulquer Salmaan
While we have recently started to see Dulquer make appearances in Hindi films like The Zoya Factor, the handsome actor has a stronghold in Malayalam cinema. He made his film debut in the film, Second Show. He has starred in notable films like Kali, Kammatipaadam, Bangalore Days, Ustad Hotel, and Mahanati. He has also starred in Karwaan.
6. Nivin Pauly
Nivin Pauly is another well-established Malayalam actor and film producer. Through his career in acting, Pauly has been known to experiment with quite a few of his roles. The actor has featured in sports dramas, comedy thrillers, and plenty more. Navin’s breakthrough was playing the lead role in a film called Thattathin Marayathu. Since this role, he has only climbed higher and higher up the ladder. Some of his most remarkable work includes Mikhael and Moothon, Premam, and Love Action Drama.
7. Aaditi Pohankar
Aaditi began her career in the Hindi film, Love S*x Aur Dhokha and later moved on to acting in regional films. Aaditi has also acted in a Marathi movie called Kunasathi Kunitari. She rose to popularity after she starred alongside Riteish Deshmukh in Lal Bhaari. Aaditi has also acted in web series such as Sheand Aashram.
8. Shalini Pandey
Shalini made her film debut as Dr. Preethi Shetty in Arjun Reddy. She played the role of Arjun’s love interest in the film and we loved her in it. Now, Shalini is all set to enter Bollywood and work under Yash Raj Films banner. The young starlet is set to act in Jayeshbhai Jordaarand Maharajavery soon. Shalini has worked in the Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi film industries as well.
9. Roshan Mathew
When it comes to acting, we have to say that Roshan Mathew has quite a good knack for it. The handsome actor made his film debut in a Malayalam film. He landed his first major role in the film, Puthiya Niyamam. His career soon took an upward hit and he started landing interesting roles in film projects like Kappela, Aanandam, Moothon, andC U Soon. We can’t wait to see the actor rise higher as each year goes by.
It’s incredible to see how porous the borders between the different types of Indian cinema are starting to become. We’re starting to see wonderful regional actors participating in fun Bollywood films and OTT shows and it’s pretty awesome to see the representation.
