Diwali is one of the most famous festivals of our country. It is celebrated every year with much aplomb and people use it as an opportunity to get together light diyas and burst crackers. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many folks will have to dial down their celebrations a little bit this year. While some are choosing to skip celebrating the festival altogether, there are definitely ways to follow it without breaking social distancing norms and while keeping your family safe. With the festive season being right around the corner, let’s take a look at some ways in which we can celebrate Diwali in the safest way possible:

1. Go Digital

Maybe you can’t be with your family this year because you work in a different city and so you have to be extremely cautious about how you choose to celebrate the festival. Even if you don’t want to go out and celebrate, you can instead spend time indoors and video call your family and celebrate with them virtually. Gifts can be sent via online delivery services and you can even surprise your family by having a show and tell, game rounds, live music, or movie night and so much more. By going digital you can connect with family not just in the same country but family that lives overseas as well.

2. Plan A Romantic Dinner Indoors

Just because you and your partner can’t travel home to spend the occasion with your loved ones, it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and make other plans. You can surprise your partner by planning a romantic evening indoors with them and have a candlelit dinner. Or you and your partner can decorate a few diyas and dress up or simply cook some of your favorite meals. Avoid eating outside food and instead, cook some home-cooked food with your loved ones. If cooking isn’t your cup of tea, there are tonnes of home chefs and restaurants that cater to homemade food in your area.

3. Make Some DIY Decorations

If you’re nervous about hitting the markets and buying decorations, you can make some yourself! You can look up lantern tutorials and make those or maybe you can order stuff online and build it yourself. There are tonnes of cute decorations you can make with craft paper or by using DIY decoration kits that you can find in the market. These kits are custom made and are easily available as well. You can find any kind of paper that you need at various shops and other small stationery stores. Many supermarkets will stock popular decorations so you will be able to find the material to make your DIY decorations easily.

4. Limit The Number Of People Who Come Over

It’s a good idea to limit the number of people who can come over during this pandemic. If you are planning on inviting guests, inform them that you would prefer if they wear a mask and only invite people that you know have been taking precautions and social distancing. If you have a vulnerable person in your family, it’s a good idea to not invite outsiders as this could prove to be highly risky.

5. Don’t Invite People Who Are Showing Symptoms

You should be careful about who you invite over. If you have friends who have just recovered from the virus, they can still be vulnerable to falling sick as their immunity has weakened because of the virus. You can also ask people to be quarantined for around two weeks before they decide to come over. This way you can feel a little safer while inviting people.

6. Change The Way You Greet People

If you’re used to greeting people by shaking their hands or giving them hugs, you can instead greet them by practicing namaste or elbow bumps or any other cool and creative way you can think about. While embracing people during the festive season is probably not the safest option, at least you can greet them in so many other unique ways. In the end, all that matters is that you’re getting to be with your loved ones and celebrate with them.

7. Follow Your Apartment’s Guidelines

If your apartment building has certain guidelines and restrictions when it comes to Diwali, you should keep them in mind. If you’re not allowed to burst crackers in your building society, it’s a good idea to follow the guidelines and restrictions and not burst them. You should also keep in mind that now is not the safest time to be out inhaling fumes that may be produced by crackers and you should follow these guidelines diligently.

Sure, this festive season may not be as incredible as the past few years but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun in your own unique way. In the end, Diwali is the festival of life and it’s about hope and new beginnings. We hope you have an incredible festive season!
