Sara hasn’t been one to shy away from talking about her issues with weight in the past. She even called Karan Johar out for mocking her past weight problems and informed him that she suffered from PCOS. This is one of the first times an actress has spoken about this condition on national television. Her candid and honest answers as well as her overall vivacious nature made thousands of women suffering from the same condition relate to her. In conversation with a leading news daily, Sara admitted “I was always comfortable in my own skin, and in fact, it was when I was at my heaviest, I knew and believed I wanted to be an actor. However, let’s be real about it. Being self-accepting is one thing, but nobody would like to see a 96 kg heroine on screen. Also, the health factor, of course.” Way to go girl!

How She Managed To Lose It All

As Sara had mentioned, she weighed 96 kgs at her heaviest and this was taking a toll on her health. The young starlet mentioned how she took a break after college to focus on losing weight and getting fitter before she planned on moving back to India and focusing on films. She graduated from Columbia in three years instead of five and took the remaining year and a half to focus on getting into her best shape. When asked how and when she decided to get fit, she stated, “For me, it all started in New York. I weighed 96kg and had a year to go before I graduated. The transition from pizza to salad and from lethargy to cardio is how I kickstarted my fitness journey. I simply started eating healthy and began working out when in New York.”

She added that since New York is such a big and multicultural city, she was spoiled for choice when it came to methods of weight loss. The actress has tried everything from boxing to cycling but stated that since she was so dangerously overweight, she had to take things slow at first. She started her fitness journey by focusing on cardio intensive workouts like running on the treadmill, walking and cycling. The actress also spoke about how she likes to change things up and doesn’t like sticking to a routine. She works out for an hour and a half every single day except for Sundays, which she refers to as her “chill day”.

The Love Aaj Kal actress signed a two year deal with German sports brand, Puma as the face of the brand. She’s seen modeling their athletic wear and sports collection in all their recent ad campaigns including their latest and most hyped campaign, “Propah Lady”. She joins the same league as cricket captain Virat Kohli and boxing champion Mary Kom.

Self Acceptance

The one thing Sara has been extremely vocal about is accepting herself. She didn’t lose weight to look aesthetically appealing. She did it for health reasons and because she understood that nobody in the Indian film industry would want to hire an overweight actress. Coming from an illustrious family of actors and poets, we can imagine how much pressure Sara faced from the outside world to fit in. The actress often talks about self acceptance and self-love during interviews.

We’re so happy to see Sara living her life and spreading such a positive message to young women out there. Her honesty, humor, and love for acting is a refreshing breath of air in an otherwise “fake” industry. What do you think of Sara’s openness and honesty?
