These Are The 7 Bad Beauty Habits You Need To Kick In 2020

Written by Niharika Nayak, BA (Media & Communication)  •

Okay, so we’re all guilty of exhibiting certain habits that might come across as unappealing or downright unhygienic. However, given the state of things in our current day scenario and how germaphobic the average person has had to get, it’s time we addressed some of these deep dark secrets. While you might have been doing some of these things unintentionally, a lot of these, you might be doing secretly. So get ready to rethink a lot of your habits and kick some, if not all, of them to the curb!

1. Constantly Touching Your Face

Look, all of us are guilty of touching our faces. However, given that we’re in the middle of a pandemic, it’s a good idea to avoid doing so. Besides increasing your chances of getting pesky zits, touching your face can also irritate your already sensitive skin. If you’re someone who is prone to acne, it may cause a flare-up or even irritate your skin enough for a pimple to pop. It’s important to keep track of how much you touch your skin and there are many ways you can practice self-control.

2. Using A Blunt Razor To Shave

Yes, women’s razor blades are more expensive and often don’t last as long as men’s razors, but that doesn’t mean we keep reusing the same old worn-out razor blade each time! Some women swear by using a sharp men’s razor instead of the more delicate women’s blades. However, if you’re someone with sensitive skin or if you have bumps on your skin, it’s best to stick with the razors meant for women. It is also absolutely essential to change your razor blade before it develops rust. If the moisturizing bar that’s usually attached to women’s razor blades is also fading away, it’s a good idea to discard the razor.

3. Popping Your Pimples

Unless you’re trained and know exactly how to pop a pimple using sterile instruments, it’s not a good idea to experiment on your own. Sure, that zit can be pesky and show up when you need it gone the most, but that doesn’t mean you go all Rocky Balboa on it and squeeze it to a pulp. The best thing to do would be to either leave it to resolve on its own or apply a topical cream that contains salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. If you’re in a hurry, you could also try the forever-recommended toothpaste on the pimple trick but that might overdry your skin.

4. Not Taking Off Your Makeup Before Bed

Oh, the horror! The absolute horror! If there is one skincare sin that is absolutely unforgivable, it’s sleeping with your makeup on. Sure, you may have had a wild night of drinking and partying and you might just want to crash but leaving your makeup on will lead to a wide variety of skin problems. It’s a good idea to invest in some good quality makeup melting facewash (for all you lazy girls out there) or investing in some makeup wipes and using a regular face wash to wash off the residue. Whichever you choose, don’t skimp out on the makeup remover.

5. Using Expired Makeup

If there is an even bigger beauty sin out there than the previous sin, it’s this! Expired makeup is called “expired” makeup for a reason. It’s dead and gone. And while you may hold sentimental value towards your makeup, holding onto it is like holding on to wilted roses; it will just gather mold. It’s important to check the expiry date on each product you purchase and make sure you replace them when they are expired. Even if you didn’t get the chance to use it as much. Like many other products, makeup too has preservatives that keep all the bad bacteria out. These expire after a point making your foundation powder the harboring ground for bacteria and fungi.

6. Not Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Firstly, makeup brushes are expensive. Secondly, for their worth, why would you want to keep them dirty in the first place? If liquid bacteria gets clogged to your brushes, it can collect bacteria which can further lead to clogged pores and acne issues. Think about this the next time you use a makeup brush. Most experts recommend replacing your brushes every three to four months to avoid using contaminated brushes.

7. Over Styling Your Hair

While serum might make your frizz go away and make your hair look smooth and silky, overusing it can leave your hair looking dull and lifeless. Overusing products can make your hair feel heavier and droop lower. If you’re using a conditioner in your hair, it’s a good idea to skip using hair serum. It’s also important to not use heat on your hair too often. Blow drying, straightening and curling your hair on an everyday basis can cause serious damage to it and change the texture of your hair. Avoid using products that contain a lot of chemicals as well. Ayurvedic and natural products are a good option to look towards if you’re someone whose hair suffers from a lot of chemical damage.

We must keep in mind that it is important to ensure we practice hygiene with our beauty habits. After all, your face is the mirror to your true self. You don’t want your skin or hair to feel dull, lifeless, or overly oily due to your negligence, right?
