7 Of The Biggest Controversies That Occurred On Koffee With Karan

The show Koffee With Karan is no stranger to controversy. Karan is known for putting celebrities in the spot and asking them extremely personal and awkward questions. The director has often been criticized for his comments and questions by fans as well as celebrities. Actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut have spoken up about Karan Johar and wanting the show to go off the air. While the show also does have a lot of fans, there are reports that it is set to go off the television screens. So here are seven of the biggest controversies that Karan Johar’s KWK went forward with it:

1. Kangana Ranaut On Nepotism

Kangana isn’t one to back down from a good debate. Her social media is filled with videos of her talking about topics that come across as taboo but it was in season five that the actress decided to open up about her true feelings on the show. She appeared opposite a star kid himself, Saif Ali Khan and she referred to Karan Johar as “the flagbearer of nepotism”. The Queen actress brought up how people like Karan Johar mocked her for her accent and that was all the drive she needed to succeed.

2. Hardik Pandya And His Offensive Remarks

Now, this was an episode that truly shocked audience members. Popular young cricketers KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya stunned audiences (and Karan) with their disgusting remarks on how they “score women”. Hardik even made a racist remark when he said he “had a little black side”. Which is funny considering he is a Gujarati Indian and not actually African or African-American. People on social media reacted badly and the episode was pulled off streaming channels (1).

3. Sonam And Deepika Crack Insensitive Jokes On Ranbir

While we’re all for girl power, there’s a difference between girl power and bullying someone. When Sonam and Deepika showed up for an episode of KWK in 2010, they did not hold back. In the episode, Deepika admitted to Ranbir allegedly cheating on her and when Karan asked her what brands Ranbir should endorse, she stated that he should endorse condoms. Ranbir’s parents were apparently furious at the actress for her statements (can we blame them?) (2).

4. Kareena’s Statements About Priyanka

Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are both brilliant actresses in their own right. However, because in Bollywood no two females can be friends, the pair have always been compared. On an appearance on KWK, Kareena quipped, “Where does PC get her accent from?”. Not one to shy away from drama, Priyanka appeared on the show next season with Kareena’s ex, Shahid Kapoor. The actress answered Kareena’s question by saying, “I get my accent from the same place her boyfriend does”. The actresses have since set aside their personal differences and have even appeared together on KWK.

5. Alia Bhatt’s Rapid Fire Disaster

Alia made her debut in the film, Student Of The Year, which happened to be directed by Karan Johar himself. The director called his star cast of Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, and Varun Dhawan on the show and tried to grill them. During the rapid-fire round, Alia accidentally blurted out the wrong answer. The only problem was that it was a simple general knowledge question. Karan asked her who the President of the country was and she said, Prithviraj Chauhan instead of Pranab Mukherjee. Many used it as an opportunity to question Alia’s intelligence but she took it all in her stride. The actress later appeared in an online skit making fun of herself and soon people forgot about her slip up. Watch the clip here.

6. Ranveer Singh’s Lewd Comments

Although Ranveer and Anushka had appeared on the show in 2011, the comments Ranveer made about Anushka went viral in 2019. A clip had been shared online exposing the actor asking Anushka if she wanted her butt pinched by her hero since he was right there. The actress appeared shocked and yelled out “Don’t talk to me like that”. What makes matters worse was that the pair were allegedly dating at the time. Talk about disrespectful (3)!

7. Salman Khan Claiming To Be A Virgin

Salman Khan truly caused everyone to roll their eyes when he said, “I am a virgin” when Karan asked him questions about his love life. Fans were baffled as to why the actor would make such a wild statement on national television. While he most likely was just trolling the director, it was enough for people to create hilarious memes on the actor (4).

While KWK might have been the start of many controversies, it is not going to be renewed for another season. After the passing of Sushant Singh Rajput, the debate of nepotism has been reignited and many are taking out their frustrations on celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar, and many others.
