As Raksha Bandhan approaches, you may feel the need to watch those really special family films with your siblings. Due to the circumstances of the lockdown, many of you might be away from your family and siblings, and are probably missing them. And while video calls make a difference, it doesn’t feel the same as meeting and spending time with them face to face. However, there are a few feel-good films you can watch together, on streaming apps! If there is one thing that most Bollywood films get right, it’s that special sibling bond. Here are a couple of movies that showcase the sibling relationship perfectly and make us believe that the actors are actually siblings!

1. Dil Dhadakne Do

The bond shared between Priyanaka’s Ayesha and Ranveer’s Kabir is clearly unmistakable. Despite their families being very conservative under the guise of being modern, Ayesha and Kabir always have each other’s backs. The camaraderie shared between the pair takes us thought glimpses of their childhood and how Ayesha always stood up for her younger brother. We also see the patriarchal pressures put on both the siblings. Their family often makes them feel like they aren’t good enough and the two siblings are often in emotional distress about it. This is a raw film about the bittersweet relationships between India’s rich and urban communities.

2. Bhaag Milka Bhaag

Set against the backdrop of the India-Pakistan partition, Milkha and his older sister Isri are the only surviving members of their family and are highly dependent on his older sister’s short-tempered husband. We see Milkha express sadness that his sister has to put up with abuse on her husband’s part and tries his best to be there for her despite being so much younger. We see the carnage caused by the partition when Milkha comes across the bodies of his own family members while escaping. We see Milkha finding his way to a camp but not finding any family members until his sister and her husband manage to find him. Over the years, one thing remains constant— the love and support of his older sister towards his dreams.

3. Jaane Tu… Ya Jane Na

The sibling rivalry and comical fights between Prateik’s Amit and Genelia’s Aditi come to life in this brilliant coming of age film about young love and college friendships. The pair are shown to fight like cat and mouse but still have each other’s backs in the face of adversity. There is an emotional sequence in the film where Aditi questions why her brother is so distant from her and he replies with, “Tujhe mera koi dost yaad hai? Kyunki mere hamesha ek hi dost thi, main dur nahi chala gaya Aditi, aur log tere zada kareeb aa gaye!” Despite the fact that Amit seems distant from his sister, they do truly love each other and stick by each others sides.

4. Bride And Prejudice

Based on Jane Austen’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice, this film is a modern Bollywood retake of the classic version. The story follows four sisters and their father’s wish to get them married to successful and wealthy men. We see the four sisters sharing a very emotional and deep relationship. Spearheaded by the feisty yet demure, Lalita, played by Aishwarya Rai, the girls are quite the handful for their older parents. We see Lalita slowly start to fall in love with a British man named Will Darcy and watch how her family deals with their rather controversial relationship. All while trying to protect her younger sisters from choosing the wrong men.

5. Sarbjit

This beautiful film captures the undying loyalty and devotion of a sister to her beloved brother. It showcases the struggle of Aishwarya’s Dalbir Kaur who devoted 23 years of her life struggling to bring her younger brother, Sarbjit, played by Randeep Hooda, back to India. Sarabjit is based on the real-life story of a man who was held prisoner in Pakistan but was murdered by inmates a few days before his release. We see how Dalbir tries to protect her brother at all costs and fights tooth and nail for his release from Pakistan.

6. Queen

The relationships between Kangana’s Rani and her younger brother Chintu is something a lot of those siblings with larger age gaps can relate to. We see Rani care deeply for her younger brother and Chintu does his best to protect his big sister from heartbreak. We see Indian patriarchy play a role in Rani’s relationship with her then-fiance when her younger brother accompanies her on a date with him. The chaperoning dates culture is something a lot of us with older siblings can relate to. We’re often made to feel like the third wheel in their relationships. Chintu is shown to be the typical younger brother with his fascination for Rani’s beautiful friend, Vijayalakshmi, and his disdain for her ex-fiance.

7. Iqbal

Iqbal is the story of a young cricket lover who is deaf and mute but still wants to achieve his dreams of being a cricketer. However, he only finds support for his dreams in his younger sister, Khadija who is his biggest cheerleader and encourages him on a path that changes his destiny. Shreyas Talpade and Shweta Basu Prasad play the siblings respectively and share a kind of sibling bond that truly inspires Iqbal to pursue his biggest dreams.

While you may be upset about not getting to celebrate Raksha Bandhan in the grand way like you may have in the past, we can still relive these fun days through these heartwarming and tear-jerking Bollywood films. Tell us which of the movies on this list were your favorite sibling relationship bond movies?
