Everyone knows that Kerala is truly a beautiful place to visit, and it is called God’s own country for many other reasons. The southern state is pickled with both beaches and mountains and is truly one of a kind. However, Kerala is more than just its pristine coastline and evergreen hills, it is a state that is so much more than that. Kerala is an Indian state that exceeds many others in its progressive attitudes, communal harmony and progress driven nature. Let’s take a look at some instances that happened in 2020 that will prove that Kerala really is a state to behold:

1. Kerala Farmers Send Tonnes Of Pineapple Fruit To Protesting Farmers In Delhi

In a wonderful show of solidarity, farmers from the state of Kerala decided to lend their support to their Northern brethren by sending them sixteen tonnes of pineapple fruit to keep them fed. The trucks had been sent from the famous town of Vazhakulam which is often called “Pineapple City”. Although the farmers in Kerala couldn’t travel to Delhi and fight with their Punjabi brothers in unison, their incredibly kind gesture was well received and much appreciated.

In the early days of 2015, Kerala had become one of the first states in India to introduce a policy that prevented harm against those belonging to the transgender community. The recent financial grants and scholarships are aimed at bringing the transgender community to the forefront and letting them have their time in the sun. While the rest of the country seems to be getting more and more intolerant towards the transgender community, Kerala proves that it is on the right side of history in its fight to stand by them.

3. Mid-Day Meals Were Home-Delivered During The Lockdown

The Kerala government took things a step further and started home-delivering the meals of students during the lockdown period. As schools remained shut during the government mandated lockdown, the government of the state realized that many students would be missing their daily mid-day meals. For students from poor economic backgrounds, their mid-day meals were an important part of their day. The government made sure that they distributed rice and provisions to all the schools and anganwadi centers that came under mid-day meal plan.

During the shortage of PPE equipment in March, the Kerala government made over six thousand masks to meet the shortage that was caused by the need for them during the pandemic. The government of Kerala instructed jails across the state to ask their prisoners to start making masks that were short for the entire state. The Chief Minister of Kerala shared pictures of the masks on his social media account as well.

The Kerala government understood the importance of good mental health and went out of their way to offer support and other forms of comfort to those who were in isolation. There were tonnes of projects that were brought in to help in strengthening and proper implementation of mental and emotional health initiatives and improvements to the healthcare system. The District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) and many other initiatives to help out those in need.

6. Kerala Launched A Virtual School TV Channel To Ensure Even Students Without Internet Could Continue Their Studies

The department of education of the state started its own virtual TV channel so that students who did not have access to the internet could continue with their studies. The channel was cast on something called VICTERS TV Channel and it was available for free on DTH, cable networks, and over the internet.

7. Teachers Use Augmented Reality (AR) To Teach Their Students

We truly are in a futuristic world and one can often find themselves being baffled by the technology that they get to witness around them. A teacher in a school in the town of Malappuram, Kerala used an elephant and cow during a presentation with the help of AR and some determination. Talk about breaking the fourth wall! It’s incredible to see teachers put this much determination and attention into making sure their students get to learn the lessons that they want and that too extremely well.

In the end, no matter what people say about the state of Kerala, there is one thing for certain. Kerala is so much more than its beauty and diversity. The state is also a haven for those looking to live in a relatively liberal and economically sound state. While many might try to bring up the negative parts and the bad news related to the state, it is also important to acknowledge all the things that the state does get right.
