For many people, the lockdown has been quite stressful, and thus some of us have put our fitness into hibernation mode. However, Shehnaaz Gill used this time to get her weight back on track and has stunned her fans with her intense weight-loss transformation. She revealed that she had lost around 12 kgs in the past six months! However, she also revealed that she did not indulge in any high-intensity workouts. When she made her appearance on season 13 of the reality television show, Bigg Boss, Shenaaz was known for being the Punjabi “girl-next-door” and was pleasantly plump. However, her recent weight-loss has proven that she had the dedication required to start on her fitness journey. In a candid interview, the rising star revealed how she managed to beat the bulge while safely quarantining at home:

Her Weight-Loss Secrets

Shehnaaz spoke about how she had been body-shamed by many people after her appearance on Bigg Boss. Many internet trolls felt the need to attack her because she was chubbier than the others, and she opened up about how it really impacted her confidence. She spoke about how she was inspired to start focussing on losing weight as the lockdown had led to work getting paused for many people in the entertainment industry. Shehnaaz had revealed the double standard in the entertainment industry and admitted that it is easier to get roles if you’re a slimmer person.

During the interview, she said, “Kai log weight lose karte hain, maine socha chalo logon ko dikhati hoon ki main bhi patli ho sakti hoon. It’s not difficult to lose weight if you really want to.”

The actress managed to slim down from 67 kgs to 55 kgs after starting her diet during March. When asked what changes she made to her diet, Shehnaaz revealed that she cut out on chocolates, ice-cream, and even eating meat. She added that she focussed on portion control and limiting her food intake to just twice a day. The actress joked that people are asking her to give up her title of “The Punjabi Katrina” now that she’s lost weight, she stated that she wishes to be known as “India Ki Shehnaaz” (1).

The Healthy Way To Lose Weight

Every dietician you speak to will recommend following a nutritionally balanced diet while maintaining a certain amount of portion control. Experts will also advise you to follow an exercise routine and make dietary changes to your body as the goal is to make your body strong and lose weight. Nutritionists will also advise you to consume a lot of water as that aids in weight loss and is great for your skin. High fibrous foods are also recommended as they keep you feeling full for a longer period of time, and this aids in helping you lose weight.

It is also advised not to “ban” certain foods from your diet. You can still eat that slice of pizza on a cheat day and not see any changes in your weight. As long as you maintain a diet of healthy food regularly and limit your calorie intake to less than 1200 per day, you will see a difference in your weight. People are also advised to cook their own meals as this will help them understand the portions they consume better (2).

Why “The Food Pyramid” Is Important

Many healthcare practitioners advise following a food pyramid based method of dieting and ask their patients to follow a routine that incorporates more food products as it is more sustainable. After all, if you’re a non-vegetarian or have a sweet tooth, how long will you resist the temptation of cheating on your diet? In order to maintain a healthy diet that is sustainable as well as weight-loss inducing, you need to eat all the different types of food there are. Sure, some people recommend following a keto diet but it is not advisable for everyone.

When you follow certain “fad” diets like Keto or Beyonce’s infamous “maple-syrup” diet, you deprive your body of the essential nutrients it needs. Many people who started following a keto diet will tell you about how they had to undergo a “keto flu” when they started out with their routines and research has shown that these kinds of diets are unsustainable. Not only does this diet restrict where you would eat and your diet, but your body needs a certain amount of carbohydrates per day in order to function right(3).

In the end, weight-loss is a journey, not a goal. If you truly believe losing weight will help you change for the better then it’s always a good idea to speak to a healthcare professional and get experts to advise on the matter. Following fad or unsustainable diets is not a good idea and you will eventually start to burn out and revert back to your old dietary habits. More than losing weight, people should feel motivated to get fit, toned, and strong as those are more important when it comes to building confidence. While Shehnaaz’s diet might have worked for her, it doesn’t mean it may work for you. Let us know your thoughts on this article in the comment section below.
