Graduation is one of the most integral moments of a student’s life. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 crisis, students who are graduating this year are unable to participate in graduation ceremonies as social distancing needs to be put into place. Many people are coming up with quirky and wild ideas to celebrate this day while still sticking to the rules of the lockdown. Like many proud moms out there, Shweta Bachchan Nanda too wanted to give her daughter the best graduation ceremony ever. Here’s what the lovely lady had in mind:

Navya Naveli Nanda was supposed to have her graduation ceremony on the 6th of May, 2020 but due to the COVID-19 crisis, her family decided to celebrate at home instead. She had graduated from Fordham University in the city of New York. Her university had not organized a graduation ceremony as New York is one of the epicenters for the coronavirus infection in the United States. Not wanting to drown her spirits, Navya’s mother wanted to throw her a little graduation ceremony with her immediate family members. The doting mom made use of her fashion designing skills and got the staff to hand stitch her darling daughter a lovely graduation gown made of tenting material. She also made a little DIY graduation cap out of chart paper.

The fashion designer and mom of two took to Instagram to share a few pictures from the ceremony and our hearts are melting. She captioned the images with, “Class of 2020 – Navya finished college today and since she and everyone else graduating this year won’t get a ceremony we decided to DIY one. With a chart paper cap and a gown hand stitched from scraps of black tenting. I threw on a Fordham ( her college ) sweatshirt over my PJ’s!! Congratulations baby I love you and am proud of you! Go forth and conquer x ( I’m not crying you’re crying)”.

Amitabh Bachchan himself took to his Twitter account to share some adorable pictures of the mother-daughter duo and spoke about how Corona canceled their travel plans and that they had to make an impromptu ceremony at home for that reason. He also mentioned that they were keeping a positive attitude during this turbulent time and wanted to share pictures to celebrate the occasion. The veteran actor also took to his blog page and spoke about the lockdown and how COVID-19 had canceled this important moment in her life. The entire family had planned on flying down to New York to attend her ceremony and celebrate the joyous occasion with her. He added that he was very very proud of her and how he understood how difficult it must be to not have something as important as a graduation ceremony. Amitabh added that he was proud of her for displaying the right attitude and keeping a positive spirit.

Shweta and Navya share a very close bond with one another and Shweta has often spoken about her in interviews. When quizzed about her decision to not let Navya enter the film industry, she spoke about how although she doesn’t have ill feelings towards those who work in the industry, she admitted that it is not an easy way of life. She added that she always tells her daughter about the cons of being associated with the film industry and she added that she sees the amount of hate her brother, Abhishek Bachchan often receives on Instagram. She added that she was so disturbed by some of the comments that it gave her multiple sleepless nights. She stated that she doesn’t want her daughter to suffer the same faith adding that the internet can be cruel at times. She also said, “Firstly, I don’t know what Navya’s talent is. Just because she is related to some famous people, doesn’t mean she has what she takes.”. Talk about being brutally honest!

While it is extremely upsetting to not be able to celebrate something as big as a graduation during this time, we must remember that all these measures are being taken for our own safety. The COVID-19 virus has claimed the lives of 264,837 as of May 6th and continues to kill daily(1). In order for all of us to stay safe, we should only go out if it’s absolutely essential for us to do so. If you or somebody you know is graduating this year, tell us how you would like to celebrate their graduation at home? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
