If only an apple a day could keep you healthy and the doctor away! It takes so much more to be healthy these days, given the levels of pollution and the super hectic lives we all lead. However, there are a few simple things to do that can keep you living long and healthy.

1. Kick The Butt

Even if it is once in a while, which we all know it isn’t, smoking does irreversible and irreparable damage to your body, both in the short and the long term. Kicking the habit is not particularly easy. But once you do it, you choose a life of health for you and your loved ones. Smoking is hands down the worst thing you could do to your body, and saying no to it the best thing.

2. Indulge In Some Chocolate

Well, we do not mean hog on it literally every day! In moderation, chocolate has a lot of benefits. It elevates your mood and keeps you in good spirits. What is healthier than being in a good mood?

Even if it is for half an hour a day or just a brisk walk across the street, the importance of exercise can never be overstressed in the list of things needed to keep you healthy. Take the stairs over the lift, walk to the shop nearby, or just walk around the office floor with a smile. Exercise never harmed anyone.

4. Meet The Doctor Annually

That pap smear, the breast examination, or the treadmill test ­ these are important life saviors. You might be in the pink of health on the outside, but your body could be a different story altogether. Invest in that annual checkup and a visit to the doctor. It always helps.

5. Chuck The Soda Can

It has soda, calories, and loads of sugar. Practically everything that is harmful and bad to your body. Kicking the can is a healthy habit to inculcate. Replace it with a glass of iced tea, if you must. Just not the soda, not even the diet kind.

6. Eat Colorful Food

Eat colorful food – for good health. Opt for whole wheat pasta or bread instead of carb-rich white rice and white pasta. Go color crazy with your vegetables, and toss them into a beautiful bowl of salads. That’s nature at its best for you.

7. Don’t Fake The Tan

Avoid the tanning machine like the plague. It is harmful, especially with the potential to cause skin cancer. Go to a beach, sit in the sun on the porch, read a book out in the park ­ get the sun to tan you naturally, and let your body make some much-needed vitamins in the process.

8. Know Your Cholesterol

Know what HDL and LDL mean, learn how to control them, practice their control in your diet and lifestyle. A few numbers, we agree, yet simple math that can save you a lot of heartburn later. Get the point?

9. Know Your DNA

Did you have an uncle with diabetes? Did your dad have a case of prolonged knee pain? Did your aunt ever have heart issues? Know what you inherited from your family, apart from the money. There is a chance you could delay, if not avoid, the inevitable through some form of medical intervention.

10. Smile A Lot

Yes, it’s as simple as that! Smiling offers a lot of benefits. So, smile. A lot in fact. It is proven to release relaxants and soothing hormones that calm you down and spread a general wellness in your body. Not to forget how magically they relieve stress. For, stress is the most lethal, unseen killer man has ever known.
