5 Simple Ways To Detox Your Body

Written by Shivani K  •

We all are living a life that is full of hustle and bustle. The exorbitant varieties of food available around us naturally lure us into cultivating eating habits that are unhealthy for our body. Additionally, our body is always exposed to toxic gases and chemicals because of the pollutants around us. We might be living in an illusion that all is well with our body and that we are taking good care of it. But are we a 100 percent sure about this?

There are a number of ways to find out though — do we feel exhausted and drained during a physical activity that requires minimal effort from our body? This surely is an alarming sign that our body isn’t all that healthy. We need to pamper our body, and by pampering here we don’t mean any aromatic spa massages. We are saying that our body needs a detox treatment. Because chances are that our lymphatic system might be blocked (1).

What Exactly Does Detox Mean?

The word detoxification sounds so complicated, right? But in simpler terms, we can call it a way of cleansing our body. It is a process wherein our body gets rids of all the harmful toxins that we accumulate as a result of the environmental pollutants around us, or due to toxic eating habits (2). A healthy detox ritual will leave your body bursting with energy. It will make you feel rejuvenated.

We want to remind you that detoxing doesn’t mean you starve yourself. Starving will only make you weaker and lethargic than earlier (3). It is very important to follow the right detox procedures that will suit your body. Here’s a simple list that we have curated for you to help you detox your body in a safe manner. Take a look!

1. Drink Enough Water

Water is considered to be a natural body cleanser. Make it a habit to carry a bottle of water while you’re on the go. Keep water bottles in your room, at your desk, in your car, etc. Drinking water never did any harm to anyone. So, just drink away and eliminate those toxins. When you wake up in the morning, make it a habit to have a glass of warm water with lemon juice squeezed in it. It is known to kick-start the body’s metabolism (4).

2. Eat Fresh, Eat Clean, Eat Organic

One of the main reasons for toxic accumulation in our body is our eating habits (5). Break your ties from fried food, processed food, packaged food, and all the vegetables and fruits that boast of a shiny coat of harmful pesticides. Make friends with organically grown produce and eat whole plant foods. Your body is sure to thank you for this decision of yours. Spruce up your health by eating right.

3. Watch Your Sugar Intake

We know you love that tiramisu from the dessert parlor down the lane. And taking your eyes off the red velvet cupcake is next to impossible. Also, how can you forget your favorite ice cream sundae that you’ve been eating so regularly that it almost feels like it’s named after you? But you need to stop! If you’re indulging in a lot of all-things-sweet, you are asking your body to produce more insulin, which might take a toll on your pancreas. It can lead to a series of chronic health problems — with diabetes being numero uno (6). We aren’t saying quit sugar for life, all we’re trying to say is go on a “no sugar spree” for a few days every now and then.

4. Exercise Regularly

It’s the kidneys and the liver that are vital to rid your body of the toxins and chemicals. Opt for exercises that will smoothen the functioning of these organs. Additionally, exercising also results in a healthy lymphatic system (7). And a shoulder shrug is one such exercise that helps drain the lymphatic system. All you need to do is inhale, and then pull both your shoulders up to your ears. And as you breathe out, slowly lower your shoulders and come back to your normal position. Repeat this at least 5 times.

5. Replace A Meal With A Detoxifying Smoothie

Extreme dieting is all fads and no fun. It isn’t even all that beneficial to our health. Never skip meals, it’s very wrong to keep your body starving. If you don’t want to eat all three times in a day, replace one of your meals with a healthy green smoothie. Use natural ingredients that will aid your energy levels and metabolism. Here’s a quick green smoothie recipe:

  • 1 green apple (chopped coarsely)
  • 1 banana
  • A cup of fresh parsley leaves
  • A cup of coarsely chopped kale

Blend in all the ingredients with two cups of water. And adjust the consistency of the smoothies accordingly.
