While we’ve commonly been lead to believe that two women can never be friends, real-life and reel life has proven otherwise. Bollywood has always set a standard for female friendships. Even if they were love rivals like Tina and Anjali in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, they were still shown to share a bond. Or even the girls in Chak De! India who came from such diverse backgrounds but set aside their differences and got their heads in the game. Movies like Bride And Prejudice showcase the unique bond shared between sisters and how it’s always been them against the world. So let’s take a look at some of Bollywood’s most empowering friendship and sisterhood moments:

1. Chak De! India: When The Girls Stand Up For Their Friend Against Eve-Teasers

In this film, SRK plays a disgraced hockey captain who is out to coach his own team of female athletes who initially give him a tough task by being difficult and not so friendly with each other. The girls do not get along at all but we see them slowly starting to open up. The most pivotal moment in their relationship with each other comes when one of them is eve-teased at a fast-food restaurant. We see all the girls band together and chase after the disgusting men, guns a-blazing. Not only is this a hilarious scene to watch, but it is also one that inspires us to stand up for other women whether you know them or not.

2. Axone: When Upasana Trusts Her Best Friend Minam Over Her Boyfriend

Axone is about a bunch of 20-somethings from the North-Eastern states of India, banding together for their friend Minam’s wedding. As a gift, the best friend of the bride, Upasana, wants to cook her the dish she loves the most. However, the entire day turns into a bunch of mini-disasters as the friends struggle to find a place to cook. As the film comes to a boil (no pun intended), we see Upasana’s boyfriend Zorem (who happens to be Minam’s ex) talk trash about their friendship and make Upasana question herself. However, she ignores him and continues to cook Minam’s favorite dish proving the point that Minam’s happiness was more important.

3. Veere Di Wedding: When Kalindi’s Besties Walk Her Down The Aisle

This movie was filled with special sisterly moments as the protagonists tackled everything from body positivity to getting drunk at their best friend’s wedding. One tender moment was when the girls encouraged Meera, who was super self-conscious of her post-baby body, to try to wear a swimsuit and be confident of her body. The most special moment, however, was when the three girls walked Kalindi down the aisle as her “brothers”. This moment truly encapsulated the special bond shared between the four girls.

4. Fashion: When Meghna Helps Shonali Recover From Addiction

Fashion showcases the brutal reality and the cutthroat nature of modeling as a profession and how so many times, people lose themselves in the process. It follows the story of Meghna, a small-town girl who wants to make it as a model in Mumbai. However, as the story progresses, we see her get more power and fame-hungry and indulge in things she isn’t proud of. All this while, competing with one of the biggest models in the league and once her inspiration, Shonali. Later on, we see Meghna come to terms with her life and slowly start to build it back after a horrid downward spiral. We also see her help Shonali cope with her addiction and take care of her. This makes us realize that Meghna only had Shonali who understood exactly what she was going through and that the once-rivals had things in common.

5. Queen: When Vijayalaxmi Showed Rani The True Meaning Of A Gal Pal

When the heartbroken Rani finds herself lost in Paris as she embarks on a honeymoon sans husband, it is Vijayalakshmi who comes to her rescue. The beautiful half Indian waitress doesn’t judge Rani after she finds out her fiance, Vijay, left her a day before their wedding. Instead, she shows Rani how to live a free life of dancing, traveling and eating good food. The two embark on a journey across the beautiful city of love as true friends and we get to see the wonderful moments they experience together. As the pair bid their fond farewells, Vijayalakshmi yells to Rani, “Vijay nahi toh kya hua? Vijaylaxmi toh hai” and hoot after Rani as her train leaves. Truly a friendship to be admired.

6. Bride And Prejudice: When Lalita Defends Her Sister Against A Conman

Lalita Bakshi is the oldest and most protective sister while her younger sibling Jaya is naive and starry-eyed. We see Lalita show off her protective nature when she chases after her sister and her alleged lover after finding out he isn’t a good person. The sisters then band together to fight off the man who tried to con them both. We see their sisterly bond as they celebrate life’s challenges together.

While the narrative has often pitted women, successful women, against each other, the strong female leads and their equally incredible supporting characters prove that women can be successful with the help of other women and behind every strong woman is another strong woman.
