For the humanitarian efforts taken by Sonu Sood, he received an incredible honor. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sonu Sood went out of his way to rescue and aid migrant workers and help them return to their hometowns. Many migrants were stuck in the big city, and others lost their job or weren’t paid their wages. Due to this, they could not bear the often exorbitant price for their tickets, and many were unable to return home. Sonu Sood heard their plight and helped arrange transport for the migrant workers. With his help, thousands were reunited with their families and sent home. As a way to thank him, Indian airline SpiceJet decided to dedicate the aircraft liberty for a Boeing 737 to the actor, making him the first actor from India to be featured on the livery of an Indian airline. Here’s what the actor had to say about receiving this honor as well as his own migrant story:
“A Salute To The Saviour Sonu Sood.”
The airline livery included an image of Sonu Sood along with a few migrant workers, farmers, children, and young college goers and included the message “A salute to the savior Sonu Sood”. They shared pictures of the aircraft on their Twitter page. Sonu reshared the images and had some kind words to say. He reminisced about the time he came down from the small town of Moga, Punjab, to the big bright city of Mumbai on an unreserved train ticket. The actor also thanked everyone for the love and support that they extended to him and added that he missed his parents even more on the occasion.
Sonu released a longer statement later and stated that he was dazed by the huge honor that was bestowed upon him. He wrote that this was a genuinely touching and sweet gesture on SpiceJet’s part and that he was overwhelmed by the lovely present. He added that he hopes he can make people proud and inspire others with the work that he does. The actor also commemorated the airline and thanked them for helping many Indians return from different parts of the world and be with their families during this pandemic.
Humble Beginnings
For the uninitiated, Sonu comes from humble beginnings and grew up in a middle-class home in Punjab. He is one of the few handful of actors in Indian cinema who started from the absolute bottom of the chain as an unknown face and grew his own brand. Although he did not come from a family of actors, he certainly inherited his philanthropic and giving nature from his humble parents. His father, Shakti Sagar, was in the textile industry, and his mother, Saroj, was a teacher by profession. During earlier interviews, he had spoken about how much he admired his father and his commitment to hard work.
While Sonu was an aspiring engineering student attending Yeshwantrao Chavan College of Engineering in Nagpur, he caught the acting bug after he started participating in modeling competitions. The aspiring student took a keen interest in acting and decided that he did not want to pursue a career as an engineer. However, rather than quitting college midway to pursue his passion, he decided to graduate and get his engineering degree first.
After receiving his Bachelors in Engineering, Sonu wound up in the city of Mumbai and started a career out on the ramp as a model. Like every other struggling new face in Bollywood, he sent pictures and headshots of himself to multiple film studios and casting auditions. Thanks to his persistence and his love for acting, he was able to land a film called Kallazhagar in the year 1999. Interestingly enough, Sonu’s first love wasn’t acting. It was actually his wife, Sonali. Yes, this adorable pair have been married for around 23 years now! The couple met back in college when they were both pursuing their respective degrees. In the year 1996, they decided to tie the knot, and the rest, as they say, is history. Sonali has been by Sonu’s side through both his worst times and his best. She has seen him go from being an unknown face in Bollywood to becoming a famous actor.
Besides being a model and actor, Sonu is also a hotelier and a film producer. He opened his production house in the year 2016 and dedicated it to his late father, Shakti. He named the production house, Shakti Sagar Productions. He also runs his family owned hotels, also named Shakti Sagar, in Juhu, Mumbai. It is located near ISKCON, and he even opened up the premises for paramedical forces during the coronavirus pandemic. Sonu always credits his father as one of his biggest inspirations in life. He has stated that he owes his entire business acumen to his father and stated that he learned everything from him.
It’s so wonderful to see that Sonu Sood is getting the due credit he deserves for all the incredible work he has done during the pandemic. His philanthropic efforts have fed thousands and saved a thousand more lives, and it truly is incredible that he has managed to do all of this.
