The 9 Struggles Of Making Plans With A Perpetual Ditcher

Written by Niharika Nayak, BA (Media & Communication)  •

Let’s face the facts. We’ve all had that one friend who no matter what the occasion will ditch plans last minute. And if you don’t have that friend, well, we’re sorry to say that YOU are that friend. The most ironic part about this is that the friend who ditches is often the friend who wanted to start the plan in the first place. Making plans with friends like these is the most difficult thing to do. Their excitement level is super high when it comes to suggesting and making plans. So here are a few struggles you can relate to if someone in your squad is a constant ditcher:

1. They Will Be The First Ones To Make Plans

These are the type of friends who will be the most enthusiastic about plans and give you the hope that they’re going to stick around. They’ll participate actively in all discussions and even offer their inputs into plans. And right as you guys are about to make these plans come through, they’ll drop a lame excuse on you and skip.

2. You Always Have To Have A Backup Friend

As much as you hate to admit it, you always keep a backup friend on hand when you’re making plans with the serial ditcher. After all, why waste a movie or concert ticket if they ditch you last minute? The smart idea is to always make group plans with the ditcher so you know you’ll have company when they inevitably ditch you last minute.

3. You’re Mentally Prepared To Not Lose Your Cool

At this point, you’re so used to the serial ditcher constantly ducking out of plans that you’ve grown accustomed to it. You know you want this friend in your life but you’re just so dang mad about the fact that they ditch plans so often! However, thanks to weeks, months, years, or even decades of patience, you know how to handle things.

4. You Expect Them To Ditch

It’s become such a daily recurrence that you are used to it at this point and you almost expect them to ditch you now. You’re so used to the way things work that you almost expect them to cancel the plan before you even make it. It’s like it doesn’t phase or affect you anymore.

5. You And Your Friends Place Bets On Whether They’ll Ditch

“Fifty Bucks says she’ll ditch by Saturday for sure.”, your friend will say and as much as you hate to agree, you know that they’re right. But hey, why not turn something irritating into something fun and make money out of it right? (we’re just kidding, don’t bet on people).

6. You’re The First To Leave When They Create A Group Chat

You know that any plan the serial ditcher makes is going to fall through eventually. So rather than waiting for the inevitable to happen, you’d quit the group and avoid drama with that ditcher friend (Bye, Felicia)!

7. You’re Waiting To Get Revenge

You wait with bated breath for the day that you can get revenge on the ditcher friend and give them a taste of their own medicine. You’re waiting for the day that they are super excited about making plans and you change your mind last minute for once. However, inwardly you know that before you can even think of changing your mind, the ditcher friend would have come up with an excuse as to why they don’t want to participate.

8. You Have A List Of Their Commonly Used Excuses

One great thing about having a friend who constantly ditches you is that they have tonnes of creative excuses they can come up with. From “Oh no, I forgot I had an assignment submission” to “ I have to visit my Dadi’s house”, their list seems never-ending. But hey, you can use some of their excuses in your day to day life too.

9. No Matter How Annoying They Are, You Need Them

No matter how annoying you find the ditcher friend, they are an integral part of your friend circle and you know that your squad is incomplete without them. The few times that your friend actually sticks around for the plan to happen, it ends up being super fun and you’re just glad you get to be with your entire friend circle for once.

Sure, it can be annoying to be friends with a serial ditcher but you know that they will stick around when times are rough and that they make things a lot more fun with their presence. If there is a legitimate reason why they seem to constantly ditch you, you should ask them about it directly and see if they might be facing some issues or if they’re uncomfortable with being around some other members of your group.
