Sometimes in an attempt to make the leading lady or man in a film look more approachable and relatable, filmmakers style them in a certain way that might come across as boring or “plain Jane”. But at the same time we’ll notice that the supporting cast might be dressed in a style that looks more interesting and powerful than other celebrities. So let’s take a look at six fashion icons from superhit movies who weren’t the actual lead characters:

Supporting Actors As Fashion Icons

1. Dia Mirza In Thappad

Dia Mirza stood out in the film as the character of Shivani Fonseca. She plays a single widowed mother to a 13-year-old little girl and a close friend and confidante to Taapsee’s Amrita. While Amrita is more meek and happy-go-lucky in her mannerisms, Shivani comes in as a mature, independent, and ambitious working woman. The movie does well when it shows Taapsee as a housewife who made the decision to be one herself rather than being forced into it. And while Shivani may come across as Amrita’s polar opposite, she emerges as one of Amrita’s biggest support systems during her painful divorce from her husband. Shivani’s sense of style can be described as modern, efficient and simple, yet straightforward.

2. Katrina Kaif In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Katrina plays the character of Laila whose job is that of a diving instructor. Although the film is focused on the everlasting and loyal friendship between Arjun, Kabir, and Imran, Laila steps in as a love interest for the lovelorn and stoic Arjun. Katrina’s sense of style in the film can be best described as rebellious and bold. Not only does she love rocking adventurous and striking outfits but she also rides after Arjun on a Royal Enfield and proves that women don’t need to wait for their love interest to chase after them and can do it themselves.

Vaani Kapoor scorches the screens with her sensual outfits, enviable body and on-point dance steps in the movie War. Vaani plays the character of Naina who is the love interest of Hrithik’s Kabir. Naina plays single mother to a young girl, Roohi and her sense of style can be best described as bright, vivacious and flirty. Kabir and Naina groove together in the song Ghoongroo and we see Naina in jaw-dropping aerial stunts and super fabulous outfits that steal all the limelight. Vaani had to go on a strict diet and heavy duty workout regime to perform all the stunts and aerial acrobatics in the film.

4. Lisa Haydon In Queen

Lisa plays the striking character of half-Indian French girl Vijaylakshmi in Queen and forms an unlikely friendship with Kangana’s Rani. Vijaylakshmi is Rani’s polar opposite and is bold, liberated, charismatic and an all round party girl. As the film moves on we see both girls adopt a little bit of each other’s mannerisms and form an unbreakable female bond. We see Vijaylakshmi helping Rani get over her broken engagement to Vijay and encourage her to “live a little”. While Vijaylakhmi might come across as a vapid person initially, you realize how hard working and loving she is as the movie progresses. By the end of Rani’s trip to France, we see a whole new version of Vijaylakshmi as she bids goodbye to Rani while wearing Rani’s favorite kurti top and jeans. A stark contrast from the bright and snazzy outfits that she dons at the beginning of the film.

5. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan In Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Aishwarya’s Saba Khan is the polar opposite of Ranbir’s childish Ayan. Saba is confident, knows what she wants and is extremely sure of herself, while Ayan is exactly what his character stereotype ends up being, a young and immature little boy. Ayan spends most of his relationship with Saba trying to make his once-love interest Alizeh jealous. He even sends pictures of the gorgeous Saba to Alizeh to make her feel insecure. Finally, Saba who had developed strong feelings for Ayan realizes that her life is better without a toxic person like him in it and asks him to leave. Her sense of style can best be described as seasoned and distinctive with her plain block colors and long coats.

6. Anushka Sharma In Dil Dhadakne Do

Our first introduction of Anushka as the charismatic and confident Farah Ali is when she’s swimming at a pool on the ship late one night. We see Farah as an independent and mega talented dancer who works on the cruise ship that Kabir Mehra’s family has rented for their anniversary. Her style is risque and Bohemian and she comes across as a very carefree and easy-going person. It is this very sense of uniqueness that draws a very controlled and unsure Kabir towards her.

Although these ladies were not the leads in the films, we can certainly say that they stole the limelight with their unique and striking sense of fashion. We have to give a special shout out to the styling teams that were involved in the production of these films as well as the actresses who channelled these roles to a tee.
