And while we have been hearing about green tea for weight loss, tea, in general, has been linked with various health benefits. These benefits include protecting our cells from damage, and even reducing the risk of critical diseases like heart problems (1).

There have been few studies that talk about how drinking certain kinds of tea aid weight loss and reduction of belly fat (2). Now, that we’ve got to know this secret, let’s dig into teas for weight loss. But first, let’s have a look at which ones are these.

This Puerh tea belongs to the Chinese family of black teas. The uniqueness of this tea is that it’s a fermented one. It has an earthy aroma and taste to it the longer its fermented. The fermentation of this tea is done by a chemical reaction between sunlight–dried tea and beneficial bacteria. Also, this tea is usually drank after a meal.

Studies have shown that this tea helps enhance weight loss (3). This tea is also known to lower the levels of blood sugar and the triglycerides levels in the blood (4).

Having this tea after a meal helps convert the fat you’ve eaten in your meal directly into energy, therefore, there’s no fat build-up.

2. Black Tea

What makes black tea different from other teas is that it undergoes more oxidation than others. It’s because of this that this tea has the characteristic dark, black color. In the market, you’ll find many blends of this tea available. However, English Breakfast and Earl Grey are the most popular ones.

Black tea is rich in flavonoids (antioxidants) which are associated with weight loss (5). The polyphenols present in black tea also help increase the gut’s productions of short-chain fatty acids — this increases metabolism.

3. Oolong Tea

This one’s tea from the Chinese community. It’s partially oxidized and falls in between green and black tea in terms of color. People love having this tea because of its fruity aroma and fragrance. There are several studies out there which prove that drinking Oolong tea helps in weight loss as it improves metabolism and speeds up the fat burning process in the body (6). Oolong tea is also rich in caffeine and catechin, these two substances together help in keeping the body mass lean (7). So, if you’re looking for a fruity tea to indulge in and reap weight-loss benefits, your search ends here.

This tea requires a lot of attention! It is processed lightly and the tea leaves are handpicked carefully while the tea plants are still young. Its distinctive flavor makes it stand out from the rest of the teas. It tastes slightly sweet, delicate, and subtle. For years, the benefits of white tea have been researched well and they range from improving the overall health condition to even killing of cancer cells (8). The most unique feature of this tea is that it inhibits the formation of new fat cells. And since there is a reduction in new fat cells, even the weight gain is reduced.

This herbal tea is made of thin stems and leaves of a South African bushy plant, Aspalathus linearis. Studies have shown that this tea actively helps in weight reduction (9). It is also rich in aspalathin and nothofagin (antioxidants) which scavenge the harmful oxygen radicals that are capable of damaging the DNA. Also, it helps in insulin resistance and managing good levels of blood sugar.
