Does Bollywood influence you or your life in any way? Bunny from Yeh Jawaani Hai Diwani or Geet from Jab We Met, who are you? When we think of the Director extraordinaire, Imtiaz Ali, we instantly connect him to the blockbuster hits he’s given us. Jab We Met is one such movie that has knowingly or unknowingly influenced us. And guess what, it’s been a little more than a decade since the movie hit the silver screen, and we still are very much in love with it. Aren’t we?

If anyone asked us who our favorite character was, most of us would definitely scream “Geet”, wouldn’t we? Geet, the leading lady of the film, was a special character to all of us in more ways than just one! Completely vivacious, free-spirited, known to speak her mind, and a little crazy, that was Geet. Geet was one character that broke the stereotypes and set a benchmark for the female characters in the movies to come. Unlike the ancient portrayal of the leading ladies as a damsel in distress, Geet was a refreshing change that won the audience’s hearts.

Geet had her own philosophy about life and wrote her own rules. She always made sure that no one was hurt by her actions. As much as she loved herself, she always hoped to see her family happy as well. There is more than one instance in the movie where Geet taught us life lessons that we need to inculcate in our lives. Let’s take a look at them.

1. Main Apni Favorite Hoon

If there was anyone that Geet was unapologetically in love with, it was herself. She loved herself more than anything else in the world. And she acknowledged it loud and clear for the whole world to know. She showed that self-obsession isn’t all that bad. In the Indian society, where loving oneself is considered selfish, Geet taught us that we need to love ourselves to live life to the fullest. Isn’t this a lesson to remember for a lifetime? It’s been more than ten years and this dialogue from the movie is still afresh in our hearts.

2. Jab Koi Pyaar Mein Hota Hai, Toh Kuch Sahi Galat Nahi Hota

Of course, we’ve heard this dialogue in other movies too, or certainly, read it in a lot of books. However, it is in the context that Geet says it in, that deserves a special mention. Remember the scene in the movie where Aditya (Shahid Kapoor) is upset over his mom leaving their family to be with another man? Geet consoles him saying that she is in love, and when in love, there’s no such thing as right or the wrong.

Geet taught us that even our parents have the right to love again. She showed us how we take our parents’ lives for granted. They too, have the right to be happy again, don’t they?

3. Sikhni Hu Main Bhatinda Ki

This can be easily ranked as one dialogue that has swag written all over it. Don’t you think? This way or that way, Geet did know how to get things done her way, for sure. Right from missing her train, leaving her family, to being ditched by her boyfriend, she managed to sail through all of it (yes, yes, at times she did take the help of Aditya Kashyap too). Dialogues such as this, which she delivered with utmost confidence and charisma, made the suicide-driven Aditya forget his grief and first set things right for Geet.

4. Kyu Ki Yeh Mera Favorite Game Hai — Zindagi

When Aditya asks, why is she playing with her own life? Geet responds with this dialogue saying that just like others consider cricket or badminton as their favorite game, life is her favorite game to play.

Like seriously, who plans a runaway wedding without informing the boyfriend? Geet took risks and she was pleasantly unapologetic about it. Most of us are afraid to take the smallest of the risks in life, aren’t we? We need to learn from Geet!

5. Akeli Ladki Khuli Hui Tijori Ki Tarha Hoti Hai

When Geet was alone on the railway platform, one of the men told this to her. Geet fought them and ran. That’s when she bumped into Aditya. He protected her. Geet could have just given in to her fears and cried in front of the men, but she chose to fight back. You’ll find a million souls out there who’d say such things and make you feel as if you were an object — to be owned and protected. Never give in and remember to fight back.

6. Try Karna Chahiye

Remember when Aditya was hesitant to jump into the lake for a swim? Geet told Aditya that how would one know if it’s risky or not until and unless they took the plunge and tried it once. Throughout the movie, Geet was seen advising Aditya to not worry so much and live life to the fullest. She even encouraged him to stick to his passion — his music.
