Have you ever felt glum or low for no reason at all? You definitely have, haven’t you? There’s nothing wrong in it, however, there could be a reason to it. And that reason could become apparent only if you ask yourself whether you’re happy or not. So what defines our state of happiness?Yes, yes, we all blame the chemical imbalance in our brains and so does the research; they all point to the fact that stressful lifestyle, genetic vulnerability, and those endless medications we keep taking for the slightest of the aches in our body are the reasons for our unhappiness and depression (1).

It’s true, we cannot control any of these on our own, and we might need professional help for that as well. But we can definitely control the stress in our lives. And listen to us when we say that at times, it’s best to get rid of certain people and things that are present around you, in order to maintain a peaceful state of mind. Let’s take a look at this list of 8 things that you need to get rid of to be a happier and more carefree version of yourself.

1. Criticism (Of Yourself And Others)

How many of you think that you aren’t good enough as a person, as a friend, as a partner or as a spouse, etc.? Always remember to love yourself, nobody is perfect! When we start to doubt ourselves, we stop ourselves from realizing our full potential. Therefore, stop whining about your weaknesses. Focus on your strengths.

If you think that by judging others you are going to be happy, well, think again. To judge others is to spread negativity. In fact, your judgment is the mirror of your inner conscience. It’s all right to disagree with someone, but never force your views on others. Always participate in constructive and healthy criticism.

2. Past Regrets And Guilt

To err is to be human. We all make mistakes in life at one point or the other. Never carry the memories of past mistakes along with you. Learn from your errors and make sure you don’t repeat them again. If you’ve hurt someone, apologize to them and move on. Don’t wallow in the regret or the guilt.

3. Fearing The Unknown

Life is full of bitter-sweet surprises. If you ever come across something new in your life, don’t fret over it. Also, don’t hold yourself back from trying new things in life. That new hobby, that new art you wanted to learn, that solo travel you’ve been dreaming of, just do it!

4. Thinking That World Is Black And White

There are various kinds of people out there and they all have different views about life. So don’t over think. No one can be a 100 percent right or wrong. So, even when you feel the world falling is apart, look for positive things.

5. Going Green With Envy

No mister! It’s not just women who are fond of being jealous of each other. Men do it too. It might be that you find another’s life perfect. And similarly, they might feel that your life is perfect too. It’s an infinite loop, a vicious circle. Humans are never content with what they have. So make peace with yourself and your surroundings. Learn to be happy with yourself.

6. Being A Control Freak

Life is spontaneous, peeps! And there is no way you can control everything. In fact, try to share your responsibilities, it’s going to make your life easier, and reduce your stress too. The most important thing that you need to remember is that you shouldn’t try to control other’s life. The urge to always be in control can actually destroy relationships and decade old friendships.

7. Being Hooked To Social Media

What’s the most chronic disease of the 21st century? It’s the social media syndrome! Are you guys laughing? Don’t! It’s a serious problem. The first thing we do when we wake up, is check our phones, right? Don’t we constantly check our phones to see if any new push notifications from our social media personal accounts have popped up, even while having a conversation with our friends and family members? Folks, we need to live in the ‘now’ and not be a part of the virtual world which does us no good. Limit your time on social media. Maybe dedicate an hour of your day to it. Stop it at that and don’t exceed the time limit that you’ve set for yourselves.

8. You Cannot Be Perfect. Nobody Ever Can!

To make efforts to better yourself as a person is an incredible thing to do. But you shouldn’t stress to reach perfection. There can never be that perfect job, partner, house, body, etc., it’s all an illusion that our minds have conjured up. As long as your life has a fair share of both, ups and downs, be assured that it’s heading the right way.

We are solely responsible for our happiness. Therefore, we need to identify the negativity in us, in our lives, and our surroundings. Bid them a goodbye and smile like there is no tomorrow.
