9 Things We All Miss From Our Childhood Summer Vacations

Summer vacations are a significant part of all our childhoods. They were a time to relax and take a break from a hectic semester at school, and we were all super excited about them. They seem like they happened a lifetime ago, and we all wish we could go back to those carefree days. Sure, we don’t miss the holiday homework, annoying school uniforms, and other restrictions we had to deal with during those days, but they were admittedly a lot of fun. Now that the mango season is upon us again, let’s look back at nine childhood summer memories from our younger days:

1. Not Having To Wake Up On Time

Of course, this wasn’t an everyday thing, and if you had strict parents, they probably expected you to be up and ready to go even though it was summertime. But almost every one of us had that one day of leeway as soon as summer vacation started to just sleep in and relax. Alarm clocks don’t mean anything during summer vacation, and we are just so glad to be able to shut them off.

2. Eating Ice Creams And “Golas” By The Beach

Ice golas are another shared childhood memory from summertime, and we have to say that eating them by the beach is probably the best way to eat them (as long as you carry hand sanitizer). Even if you weren’t a fan of ice golas, you had plenty of ice cream options to choose from at the beach. Sure, you ended up with sticky fingers and maybe a brain freeze or two, but nothing can beat that feeling of the salty wind in your hair and the warm seawater embracing you.

3. Getting To Hang Out With All Our Colony/Building Friends

Another awesome thing about summer vacations was that we got to hang out with all of our building friends without any time restrictions. During those days, our friends meant the world to us, and getting to hang out with them during summers was the only time you could stay past your regular “curfew”.

4. Waiting Last Minute To Finish Up Our “Holiday Homework”

Holiday homework was quite a drag. Moreso, why would it get called “holiday” homework? Isn’t the whole point of a holiday to take a break and relax? Sure, there were a diligent few who did the homework as soon as summer break started so they could relax all summer, but let’s be honest, most of us just procrastinated and held it off to the last moment.

5. Finally Getting To Go On That Family Vacation

Don’t you miss those days when family vacations were super easy to plan and didn’t involve people flying in from different parts of the country/globe? We do too! One of the best parts of summer vacations was getting to travel with your entire family and planning things out so that you got to spend time with your favorite cousins.

6. Getting To Spend Time With Our Favorite Cousins

Sure, we often talk about how our annoying and overly inquisitive aunties are a nuisance, but we sure did love spending time with their kids, didn’t we? Summer vacation was the one time where all your favorite cousins got to be in one place. Your cousins from abroad would probably come back to the country during this time, and you’d get overloaded with a tonne of goodies from them.

7. Attending Summer Camps

While not all of us got the chance to attend summer camps (thanks to strict parents), those who did can definitely tell us about their fun memories. Getting to go to summer camps was so much fun because you got to interact with kids from all over the state/country. Plus, if you had a crush on one of the kids at your camp, you’d get to spend time with them during the summers. Getting to attend summer camps was probably the first taste of freedom outside your parents’ homes and definitely equipped you with some survival instincts that helped as you grew older.

8. Spending The Full Day At A Water Park

Water parks are open for most of the year, but nothing beats the feeling of going to a water park during the summer vacations! The air outside was hot while the water on the slides was super cool, and it was the best way to relax and catch a break. Plus, you probably got to partner up with your favorite cousins and relatives during this time.

9. Having Almost Zero Responsibilities

Of course, none of us genuinely had “zero responsibilities” during summer vacations, but the few that we did have were very minute. Besides finishing up your holiday homework, you were probably expected to help out around the house with chores every now and then. However, other than those few responsibilities, it was super relaxing to do so all summer.

Summer vacations were a time when things were easier and just all-around relaxing. We miss feasting on kacchi-kairis with our cousins and trying out new recipes. Do let us know which of these childhood moments you miss the most in the comment section below!
