You slog and you slog and you slog at work but you still don’t achieve the kind of success you aimed for. Ever wondered why that is so? That’s because hard work is not the only thing it takes to succeed. The work environment you’re a part of matters as much. And if you keep on tolerating things you shouldn’t, you’ll unwittingly end up creating roadblocks in your own career path. So, if you want a successful career, buckle up and do not tolerate these 11 things at work at all costs!
1. Useless Bureaucracy
Some companies like to spy on every second their employees spend in the workspace. They want you to create daily reports of all the tasks you did and report to them in minute details. This kind of long-term micromanagement often leads to unhappy employees, high staff turnover, and lower productivity (1). Such companies are slow and do not offer any sort of career advancement.
2. Lack Of Open-Door Policy
This a big red sign. When you’re told that discussing a raise or a promotion is rude and untactful, you should start looking for a new job. Financial advancement is your right when you work hard for a company, and if they don’t encourage an open-door policy on that front, you likely won’t have a fledgling career.
3. Several Incidental Costs
Your job is meant to help you earn and not spend what you earn. Companies that take money out of your pocket to fulfil their own needs (and don’t even compensate you for it) are not the kind of companies you should be working for. Even if the expenses are small like stationery.
4. Being Forced To Take The Blame
If your boss gives you an urgent task without even telling you about it and you miss the deadline, you are bound to get a sour email. But that won’t be justified, would it be? Especially when you’re absolutely sure you never received an urgent task mail in the first place! If this happens on a regular basis, change your job.
5. Not Getting Prompt Answers
Having any kind of job means coordinating with others. If your work partner suddenly disappears when you immediately need their cooperation on something and constantly ignores your calls, texts or emails, you shouldn’t take it down quietly. You should complain to the HR or your boss if you work requests are constantly ignored.
6. False Promises
Several bosses offer their employees false promises of a raise or promotion but never carry them out. Do not fall prey to this. This is just their way to get maximum work out of you. Bosses like these are unable to retain their position, so you can forget about the fulfilling of the promises they made to you.
7. Getting Favors From You
Due to the friendly nature of you and your boss’ relationship, they might ask you to do them favors such as working extra hours. If this continues for a long time, it becomes a way for them to exploit you and get free work hours out of you. You’ll find yourself with no time to do your own thing. Get out before you go crazy!
8. “That’s Not How It’s Done Here”
In the habit of hearing this sentence? That’s super alarming already! Sentences like these are only used to mask the unrecorded rules of a firm, such as not having an opinion of your own, never crossing the boss or never taking off days beyond a certain limit. If the rules of your company are not in accordance with the law, you shouldn’t work there for long.
9. Emotional Blackmail
When you finally make the decision to leave the company, your colleagues or boss may use emotional blackmail to make you stay. They may even use the same tactics to get extra work out of you or make you go against your ethics or wishes. Experts say if you cave in and give up on your ethics, you are less likely to succeed.
10. “We’re In A Tight Spot Now”
Companies that are constantly ‘struggling’ will never be good for your career. Extra duties will turn into fixed ones and raises and promotions will never happen. In this case, it’s better to leave. You should only stay if your company tells you how long the crisis is going to be and compensates you for working overtime.
11. Sexism
Even in the 21st century, sexism is very much of a real problem. You should never tolerate any sort of gender discrimination or sexual harassment. Such instances can lead to stress and negatively impact your confidence levels, thereby preventing you from being successful.
The job life is a hard one and struggle is ever persistent if you want to make it big. However, you should not tolerate negativity of any kind. So, keep moving forward if you ever encounter the above 11 instances in your work life.
