When in doubt to cook or not to cook, hit a restaurant and enjoy a hearty meal. It’s the general rule of thumb, and easily the best way to enjoy a pleasant evening after a grueling day.
But not anymore!
Since when did going to a restaurant turn into a bad experience, you ask?
Well, since you started ordering the wrong dishes!
Eat-as-you-like when in a restaurant sure sounds ideal, but there are certain dishes that you should never order. Some of the on-the-menu food items can ruin your day and prove to be an absolute and utter waste of your money!
Don’t believe us? Hear it from the horse’s mouth! Professional chefs and restaurant workers recently revealed a long list of dishes you should never order on Reddit. Here are the top 5!
1. Lemon Water
You could also refer to it as a glass of water with a slice of lemon in it. Irrespective of whatever you call it, DO NOT order it. It’s the dirtiest item on any restaurant’s menu, so it’s definitely not something you would want on the table.
Dr. Philip Tierno of the University of New York conducted research and analyzed the lemons from a total of 76 restaurants (1). He found out that out of the 76 samples he had collected, 21 of them contained bacteria that could be harmful to your digestive system. He also discovered that many of these lemons had traces of human feces on them! Besides that, most of the chefs at the restaurants admitted that the lemon they used for water or other drinks was cut up with the same unwashed knife that was used on the meats.
If that won’t make you retch, we don’t know what will.
2. Fish
Surprise, surprise! As much as you drool at the sight and smell of that salmon, it is in your best interest not to order it. Or any other fish in fact. Even other forms of water-residing meat. Basically, don’t order seafood. At least not at the beginning of each week!
The reason?
One Redditor, a restaurant owner, said that seafood specials are only cooked up as a way to get rid of the old meat stock and prepare room for the new one that is due the next day. He also added that many specials are also created as experiments; however, most of them are just a way of clearing out old stock before having to throw it out.
This kind of thing happens at McDonald’s too, by the way, according to a Redditor who worked at a Big Mac chain for 3 years.
So, make sure that fish is off the table.
3. Any Food That Is Not A Specialty Of The Restaurant
If you’re visiting that little Italian place at the corner, why would you want to order their Chinese? That’s not what the restaurant is known for and it’s not even its specialty. If you want to have a fine dining experience, it’s a must that you stick to the restaurant’s claim to fame rather than the lesser known items on its menu.
According to a Redditor known as Frogfeets, who worked at a deli known as Winn-Dixie, you should only stick to the specialty as the rest of the food is likely to be made up of scrap meat and leftovers. The deli he worked in typically used expired cheeses and meats in the rest of their foods as they would normally not sell very well.
More food for thought, eh?
4. Fried Steak
Another surprise entry on the menu, a steak that has been fried well is not something you should ask the waiter for. And there are plenty of reasons for it. First of all, a well-fried steak is heavily processed, which can mess with the structure of the meat. The deep frying it goes through can even ruin its protein content and make the meat dry and rubbery. All in all, it’s going to be an awful choice and may leave a rather bitter aftertaste if you know what we mean.
5. Bread
Last but not the least, the humble bread should be out of the question if you plan to dine out. Or even breakfast out. Whichever it is. You don’t want to know the reason of this though, as it can make your stomach churn a full 360 degrees!
Alright, we’ll tell you regardless. You see that bread basket on your table? Well, don’t be a fool to think that fresh bread has been put in it just for you. It’s the same bread that was offered to the previous diner. And the one before that. And the one before that. The only thing that changes is that extra bread is added to replenish the depleted stock. Otherwise, it’s the same bread that that lady with a cold touched.
We can sum all the above in just two letters – EW! So, if you care about your health, never order these 5 things the next time you eat out.
